What happened to Hawaii Chess???
aloha fergussc. I live in the Hilo area and enjoy playing (although I am likely at a low level). I study regularly and am actively trying to improve my game. If you’d like to beat up on a scrappy player at a coffee shop some day, I’d be happy to be your victim. Perhaps the act of playing openly in public will help open unexpected doors?

There is a new resurgence of face-to-face chess in Hawaii, thanks to a new board of directors for the Hawaii Chess Federation (HCF). We have just started to post information on www.hawaiichess.com. Kauai and Oahu both have regular USCF rated tournaments now. The next one is June 4th, 2022. I am a USCF Senior TD and love to travel for chess, either to play or to direct tournaments. Right now my focus is on rebuilding our scholastic chess scene in Oahu, and starting one on Kauai, as the Scholastic Director.
There are also some very active Chess.com clubs like Hawaii Chess Club and Team Hawaii, thanks to the efforts of Louie Tomsik (uptophigh). If you like playing 3-day games, I highly recommend you join both of those clubs. He also is working to start a chess.com league for all islands, with each island having their own chess team and chess club site. It's a great idea, and I hope the Big Island will participate. Kauai is in, and we have a team that does pretty well each season in the World Online Team Championships. Our state K-12 team has had very impressive results, finishing ahead of Oxford, Harvard and almost every major university in the 2020-21 season. We have a group of extremely talented online young players here in the islands.
I heard they got rid of the chess tables on Waikiki. Those were legendary. A lot of blitz action. Used to do this Friday evening then in the hotel across from the chess tables was a dance/night club called Eurasia used to go to.
btw, Hawaii tournaments just got a new director and made the tournaments rated so #R2CM I guess
Looking at the list of active directors that have done events in the last year, Hawaii has one active Senior-level US Chess TD ( AlohaKauai said he was a SrTD so that may be him), one active Local-level TD (plus two inactive) and seven active Club-level TDs (plus one inactive). It does not have National or Associate National level TDs, but they do not seem necessary at this time. When I honeymooned in Hawaii in the '90s there was one club in Maui in a meeting place and one casual one on the big island in a restaurant. Going back for my 25th anniversary (pre-Covid) there was a casual club in Maui in a pizza place. They were all found on the internet (though the O.P. indicated the links are now dead).
International events require somebody with an arbiter license from FIDE and US Chess requires a TD to achieve Senior level status or higher before allowing them to take a test to get approval to apply for the license (the test from US Chess is free but FIDE has to be paid 20 Euros for the license).
I live on the big island and would love to play. We meet on wednesday and sat.
Tournament happening in Feb. Drop me a note if you are still on the BI

At the time I was in HI due to army, I was also in okinawan karate and played from time to time chess over there plus other activities like Magic: The Gathering. So didn't devote too much time in chess.
Too bad they got rid of the tables:

While the new HCF board is working on revamping the website www.hawaiichess.com, stay up to date with ongoing news and chess events through the Chess.com clubs, www.chess.com/club/hawaii-chess-federation and www.chess.com/club/hcf-scholastic.
You will see that USCF-rated chess on Hawaii is reaching a whole new level in 2023.

Here's what is happening with Hawaii Chess in 2025. We are the US national champions in the USTCL. Please join the team if you live here! www.ustcl.org
