Chess, according to the HBO special on Fischer, is played by 500 million people. At one point Fischer was known by so many people in the world that he was only second to Jesus Christ! Luther was the first to use the printing press to put a lithograph of himself on a poster, posted around Europe, and he became the first person to have his image be known by such a large number. Fischer's game in Iceland, covered by TV, did essentially the same thing.
