An excerpt from Attacking Chess by Josh Waitzkin.
I was dissapointed to see that my father was on the other side of the room watching another game. While my opponent decided whether or not to take my rook, I ran over to my father and pulled him to the board. I remember whispering: "Watch this." I knew that on my next move, Dad would really sweat.
I played 1. Re3 and by now Frumkin was taking off my rook and there were about a dozen players standing around after 1. Re3 1... Nxd1. It is intersting that whenever someone is sacrificing material players from across the seem to be aware of it and many come to watch. It is as if these moves have a scent or radience. I paused for a dramatic moment as though I were thinking deeply... but in truth there was nothing more to think about I had calculated this one through to mate. What did I play?
