where do you suppose black's next move to be if white were to promote the pawn to a queen? promoting to a rook leaves white with a move (Kb7), promoting to a queen does not.

i've read what i thought were all the rules, but i guess i was not clear on what was stalemate.  so black can't move, thus stalemate.  sorry, new to the game.  thanks for the info.

Yes, but obviously not in check, otherwise that would be checkmate if they can't either use a piece to block that piece, king move out of the way, or capture the piece that is checking.
