Is it possible to reconstruct a sensible game to reach this position?

Clearly, White will win by smothered mate after RxQ, but how did the position come about? Is it possible to reconstruct without glaring blunders by Black? (I suppose overlooking a Whte trap/combination is OK.

I love Escher, although I feel he may give me a headache if I look at much of his stuff for long.

After 1. RxQ, 1...Nf2 is checkmate in the Escher position, a smothered one at that.
