Because, Gert-Jan, Rh5 isn't mate, black could play Rf5.
youre right .I see.
This is the solution :1. e4 Rxe4 2. f3xe2#
If not take: 1. e4 Bxh7 2.Ne2# Any other move wil lead to Ne2#
Dear Sir,
I think you are suggesting the there is zugzwang, but if the obvious piece is taken, black should not take back or he will clearly lose. He can take the bishop and it is not mate in 2 as posted.
in any hard two move puzzle
checking in first move is difinitly wrong...
tempo is the key....
possible solution:
1.Rh1 Bg5 2.Qh2+mate
1.Rh1 Be7 2.e3+mate
1.Rh1 Rxe2 2.Nxe2+mate
1.Rh1 BxB 2.Nd5+mate
1.Rh1 Re5 2.Qg4+mate
1.Rh1 BxN 2.Rh4+mate

Dear Samh,
Your analysis of the puzzle evidentally hasnt been full, as it IS zugzwang and capturing the bishop WILL result in mate-in-2. Sorry.
Someone might of posted it, but here it is
1) Bc5, Bxh7. 2) Nd5#
1) Bc5, Bxc7. 2) Rh4#
1) Bc5, Rf8-f5. 2) Qf5#
1) Bc5, Re8-e5. 2) Qg4#
(answers in white)
