Aha, nice puzzle. I missed the move after Bg5, I was moving the wrong piece there. High quality ;)

Because, Gert-Jan, Rh5 isn't mate, black could play Rf5.

youre right .I see.

This is the solution :1. e4 Rxe4 2. f3xe2#

If not take: 1. e4 Bxh7 2.Ne2# Any other move wil lead to Ne2#

David_Spencer

I thought about that, but Bg5 gives Black a flight square at e5.

Dear Sir,

I think you are suggesting the there is zugzwang, but if the obvious piece is taken, black should not take back or he will clearly lose.  He can take the bishop and it is not mate in 2 as posted.

rjboy

in any hard two move puzzle

checking in first move is difinitly wrong...

tempo is the key....

possible solution:

1.Rh1 Bg5   2.Qh2+mate

1.Rh1 Be7   2.e3+mate

1.Rh1 Rxe2   2.Nxe2+mate

1.Rh1 BxB   2.Nd5+mate

1.Rh1 Re5   2.Qg4+mate

1.Rh1 BxN   2.Rh4+mate

Search the forums for 'Organ Pipes.' AllThatJazz posted this puzzle a year and a half ago. Then Nimzovich posted the original 'Organ Pipes' puzzle along with a short history of the many imitation puzzles.

Dear Samh,

Your analysis of the puzzle evidentally hasnt been full, as it IS zugzwang and capturing the bishop WILL result in mate-in-2. Sorry.

bossofdragon

Someone might of posted it, but here it is

1) Bc5, Bxh7. 2) Nd5#

1) Bc5, Bxc7. 2) Rh4#

1) Bc5, Rf8-f5. 2) Qf5#

1) Bc5, Re8-e5. 2) Qg4#

(answers in white)

I dont know if it was solved, but thats how i figured it out.

Nytik

Sorry bossofdragon, that wasn't the solution, as the mate-in-2 can be blocked.

bossofdragon

how?

Nytik

1... Bg5

bossofdragon

ooh, well thats a shame for me :[

Nytik

Yeah, sorry. You can see the solution earlier in the thread.

Sir, if the rook moves, can black move the rook down to block the pawn or even go beside the king to prevent mate?

If Re3, then Bh2#, or if Re4, fxe4#.

Hope that answers your question.
