Ng6+ is a check, not a mate, because the Black Bishop on b1 can capture it. The pawn cannot capture. Look at the coordinates! The first rank is at the bottom of the board and the 8th rank is at the top! That means Black's pawns are moving downwards, and since pawns can't capture backwards, the pawn can't capture our queen! Therefore, it's mate!
