It is a nice diagram, but your original picture didn't show all 64 squares. I think most people will assume that the squares not shown are not used and the pieces create the border around the board. If we are playing with a full board, then we wouldn't know for sure if there was a white queen on a1 or a8 because we can't see those squares. We can assume that those squares are not occupied, but that is another assumption about the diagram.
