Does black have to mate?

nwav

The idea is that you don't even know if that can be done, I think. It's as if it were a real game

kco

I don't think so Smile I think is about winning the endgame here.

nwav

Oh, yeah, and kco hasn't looked at the answer either...

kco

ivandh are you just being funny ? Laughing I presumed if is it Black to move black should be winning this game.

modee1

Yah, i think this is a game where black is suppose to win

ivandh

Its not about winning or loseing, its about getting your king to the other side man

Are these hints or what?!

Perhaps the idea is to salvage a draw.

Could be a draw BorgQueen :-)

I think that the idea is that if any white pawn(except h7) is forced to move black will win.

So i think that the solution is Rh8 to force the white king to either leave the h7 pawn or get trapped in a stalemate situation if he tries to take the rook.

Kg8 seems to work too..

Spoiler Alert ! Answer will given down below.

Alexei Shirov vs Levon Aronian, Tal Memorial, Moscow 2006.

The event should have revived memories of the late Mikhail Tal's mercurial brilliance, but much of the play proved pedestrain.
   This endgame provided a rare magical moment. The obvious play is 1....Rh8  2.Kg7  Rf8  3.h7 Rf7+  4.Kg8 Rf8+  5.Kg7 Rf7+  6.Kg5 Rh7 with a draw.
Then all-time No.1 Garry Kasparov, watching on the internet, remarked: "The key to the position is White's b2 pawn."
Sounds bizarre, but Kasparov was not joking. Work out how the game ended, with Black to move, and you will see what he meant.

Solution-  1...Rf7   2.h7 Rf8  3.Kg7 Rh8 ! 4.Kxh8 Kf7 (White's king is trapped so he can only make pawn moves)  5.d5 cxd5  and now White must advance 6.b4 cxb3 en passant 7.c4 b2  8.cxd5 b1=Q  9.d6 Qb2 mate. The rare pawn capture en passant rule decide the game in Black's favour.

This was written by Leonard barden which appear in the Western Australia's paper 'Sunday Times'
