shiro_europa

Nice, I was thinking 1...Ke7 with the same idea, but hadn't worked out who queens first after white runs to c6.  Rf7-f8-h8 is a forceful way to do it.  I'm sure a GM, heck even IMs, would see this solution instantly.

and here is the actual game...

Deranged

kco

you right is not an instant win there nevertheless is still a win for black

cloggy

Neat little composition, wow I just learned it came from an actual game!

Because there is no point.  There is no Kxh8 threat, so what does it acheive?

I guess you saw my post before I deleted it (because I hadn't looked at previous posts and I thought my question was probably redundant, but I don't think it was)... well, thanks for the response, and yes it appears you're right. A really interesting position -- and returning to the original game it's amazing what super GMs are able to see and feel in a position at blitz speed (or blitz kibbitz in Kasparov's case).

Dragec

Very nice puzzle, and its even better because it's from the actual game. Smile

@ #38

Actually, yeah it is an instant win, white has absolutely nothing.  I wouldn't have any problem resigning as white in that position.

1... Rf7
2 h7 Rf8
3  Kg7 Rh8
4  Kg6

4 Kxh8 loses quickly to ... Kf7, 5 d5 cxd5, 6 b3 cxb3, 7 c4 b2, 8 any b1=Q, 9 any Qb8 (and others) #.

4.... Kf8
5 Kxf5  Rxh7

The game might now continue:

6 Ke6  Rh6+
7 Kd5  Ke7
8 d5  c4!

8... cxd5 also wins.

9 Kf5 Rh2

The Rook picks off the Queenside pawns, with an easy win.
