How are Puzzle Battle scores calculated?
https://support.chess.com/en/articles/8708930-what-is-puzzle-battle-on-chess-com
It would be useful if there were a link to that article on the Puzzle Battle page, I had to resort to a web search to find it.
Hi Zwenna
Thank you for linking to that description of the rules.
I did already know those basic rules.
What I'd like to know is how Puzzle Battle scores are calculated - i.e. IIRC sometimes I get 6 or 7 or 8 points for a win.
To what extent is that because of my relative rating vs that oppo vs other factors, such as how much I beat him by?
E.g. When you have won a battle and the app offers you the chance to "Claim Win" does that mean you don't get more points if you solve more correctly?
And does beating someone without getting any wrong give you a better score?
And does getting a much higher score than an opponent get you more points for the win?
another data point:
When I was watching some top players I noticed that when one of them won, he kept solving puzzles.
Is that to earn more points by beating the oppo by a greater margin?
but sometimes I only go up or down +/-1 point ![]()
e.g. last night me and an oppo both ended up failing on 15 (with 3 strikes) - but I went down a point
presumably that's because he had a lower rating than me...
but was it just minus 1 point because he had a slightly lower rating than me - and would it have been minus more points if he had a much lower rating than me?
Oh, I did not understand you were talking about puzzle battle ratings rather than season points, pardon me.
The article linked above does not say anything about ratings, but I think puzzle battle uses a Glicko system similar to games. Which means your rating change will mostly depend on the difference to your opponent's rating, and it does not matter how high you win or lose.
But that is just guesswork based on my experience, staff members likely can tell you more.
Hello. My puzzle rating has dropped by 1000+ for some reason I don't understand. It should have been 2800+ normally, but it has since dropped to around 1800 for some reason I don't understand.
I think that higher-rated players get only a small increase in rating for beating lower-rated players (depending on the difference) and getting more puzzles right can lead to a higher increase in the rating. But sometimes I am puzzled about the result, so it can be even more criteria, as you suggest.
I wish there was a way to see your rank based on puzzle rating, or at least the rating distribution. I feel like puzzle battle has been abandoned a bit by chess.com.

Yes, my rating for straight puzzles dropped from about 2300 to 1700 recently when chess.com rerated everyone.
They wanted to make the Puzzle rating more in line with other ratings.
There's much info and discussion of that on the site.
But that's not the topic of this thread.
Please say if you know how Puzzle Battle scores are calculated.
