Knight's Tour

Sort:
Frezco

Task: Complete a knight's tour that starts on a7 and ends on h1.

(I'm not aware of a program that solves a tour with both the starting and ending squares assigned.)

Assertion 1: This is rather easy to do, using the technique I explain here.

Assertion 2: Most people who are motivated to do so, can learn to do this blindfolded.

Hmmm... I'm not sure about copywrite issues, but the only other place I've ever seen that method is a product by a company called grey matters. If it's widely known though, fair enough.

I got frustrated with the diagram having the kings on board and having to move the other one every other turn. I need a cup of coffee now.

btw. The links you gave seem to time out all the time. Better check it later

Not sure what you mean by your frustration.  There are no kings in a knight's tour puzzle, and there's only one knight.  Maybe the coffee has helped.

As for the time outs: I've yet to experience one, but I'm testing.

The copyright is for a "literary work" (whether or not it's great literature is debatable, I suppose).  It's not intended to protect the technique itself.

The basic method is probably quite ancient.  Check out this link .  I suspect the idea has been discovered, forgotten, and rediscovered many times over the years.

As you pointed out, Grey Matters covers the same ground.

For myself, I worked it out independently as described here.  I did this before I became proficient at google searching and mouse clicking.

I meant that if you try to post a puzzle, diagram or a sequence of moves in the forums, the board cannot be set up so that it would not include the kings. As far as I've figured it out anyway.

Oh.  Yeah, the analysis board at chess.com doesn't work for knight tours.  Here's a site.  There, the knight always starts on a8, but you can make h2 the target 64th square and do a mirror image of my "task."

A ludite like myself would print out a chessboard diagram and get a pencil.  Maybe frezcogames.com should include a printable blank board (in time).

Here's another Knight's tour...

Solve a tour that begins on a8 and ends on e5.

Since this one starts on a8, you can use this board.
