This is a checkmate in 2 puzzle, white to move first.  I cannot figure out the solution for the life of me.  It is driving me NUTS.  PLEASE someone help me solve this damn puzzle.  mate in 2, white moves first.  black is moving down, white is moving up.  Thanks!

Nytik

1. Qf7 Kf4 2. Nxd3#

TheGrobe

Are you sure?  Black seems to have a lot of outs aside from Kf4 after Qf7.

Nytik

Name them and I shall name the checkmate. I'm fairly sure the first move is Qf7.

Dakota_Clark

Nytik, did you mean 1. Qe7+ ?

Nytik

No, Devout_Monk, because then black has Be6.

TheGrobe

1... Kd6 for example.

Nc4#.  It's the answer to Kd6 as well.  The position of White's King has been throwing me off.

What about 1... Qb3 though?

Nevermind.  Qxc7#.

Tough puzzle.

Nxd3+ fails as the Bishop on f5 can capture. The 2 move Chckmate is Qe7+, Kf4 being the only legal move and then Qe3#

As I have already said, 1. Qe7+ allows 1... Be6 and therefore 1. Qf7 is the correct move.

The Bishop on f5 cannot capture after 1... Kf4 because it's pinned by the Queen on f7.

1... Qb3 fails to 2. Qxc7# and I believe every other move (including 1... Kd6) fails to Nc4#.

qf7 qxb2 then what?

Here's the full solution:

Solution: 1. Qf7! [2. Qxc7#]
 1. ... Kf4 2. Nxd3#
 1. ... Kd6, Bf5~ 2. Nc4#
 1. ... Nb4~ 2. Bg3#
 1. ... Nxd5 2. Qxd5#

deadlyduck

After Qf7, what does white play if Black replies Be4?

rooperi

Qf7 threatens mate, Qxc7#.

I gave 4 variations in the prevoius post, everything else is Qxc7#

deadlyduck

Qf7 Be4 Qxc7 Kxd5 is not mate!

rooperi

Solution: 1. Qf7! [2. Qxc7#]
 1. ... Kf4 2. Nxd3#
 1. ... Kd6, Bf5~ 2. Nc4#
 1. ... Nb4~ 2. Bg3#
 1. ... Nxd5 2. Qxd5#

If Kd6, Or the Bishop on f5 anywhere, Nc4#
