Mates that are difficult for engines

Yeah I saw that too! I like these grotesque starting positions even if technically they are illegal. I'm curious how well engines run when there are 60 pieces on the board?

LOL, I was thinking the same thing, so I wanted to show you what happens because I knew it would be hilarious!

Here is Stockfish on the grotesque position:

And here is Crystal:

And here is Berserk:

Down to the GUI I would guess.

Everything is fine in my version of Arena.

I think the difference is that you are playing the engines against each other, I was just using "analyze" mode on the engines I tried.

Still works fine.

ok , let me try again and see what was going on here.

AHA!, I tried using the Stockfish official version 15 and it did not crash, however if I use the development version it crashes.

EndgameEnthusiast2357

Try plugging a position like this into the engines:

And see what happens!

Ok, trying it out. I see what the REAL problem was when the other engines crashed...You must DISABLE the NNUE file if you don't want it to crash, so it had NOTHING to do with using the official version.

Here is Stockfish on DEVELOPMENT version on your position with NNUE DISABLED.

I ended the search after 3 minutes and 39 seconds because it was taking forever to resolve the next ply.

MARattigan

I got something similar, but when I tried playing it the clock stopped decrementing after 2 moves and no CPU use was showing.

I feel like a mate may be forced on either side in that position, what about something less extreme:

Once again I let an engine think about it, but it could not resolve the next ply in a reasonable amount of time, so I ended the search after 11 minutes and 18 seconds with the engine "ShashchessGZ" which is a Stockfish derivative that I believe is at least as strong as Stockfish, and perhaps ever so SLIGHTLY better than Stockfish, though I'm relying on personal experience rather than any testing to find out if it is better.

If interested in ShashchessGZ you can download it here, and it is completely free with no cost to you:

Rubbish evaluation though.

Here's SF15.1 actually playing it. White ran out of time because I only put 12 minutes on each clock, but the writing was on the wall anyway.

EndgameEnthusiast2357

I had a feeling there were too few queens.

Can we try that again?

drdos7

Nothing here, I ended the search after 8 minutes 37 seconds.

Then I doubt it would get anything for this:

The fact that it's an illegal position doesn't stop the moves being legal under the definition of legal move in FIDE art. 3. But it does make them illegitimate, because the game has terminated at some point before they're made.".........

We humans joke, contextualize, transpose and interpret but we can't claim operational power by definitions made in another domain. The chess rules only apply to orthodox chess games though some may be inherited at will in domains like puzzling and compositions. Because these domains decide it - not because FIDE has any say there. The common error is to assume that legal FIDE moves are just well-formed moves but they are not, not even in orthodox chess. To verify that you merely have to read article 3 in its entirety. It not only defines the geometry of piece moves but also the legality in relation to the past of the game (e.p. and castling) and the whole board position (check dependencies). Also the side on move is not arbitrary and depends on the alternating move sequence in the game from the. start. You can't claim a legal move without being able to establish which side is on move. That's why arbitration always requires a game record.

Because humans instinctively understand all this they will create a workable set of rules in their mind to handle these grotesque diagrams. It's simply tongue in cheek free association. The one error is to somehow assume that FIDE rules say this or that about these diagrams while we distanced ourselves so far from them that we can't hear them say anything! There is just dead silence.

Note: Because there is no notion of well formed moves in our chess laws, people will continue to fill that void with legal moves which somehow looks as the nearest thing to them. This misconception has even entered the retrograde logical domain and caused it to totally crash. Definitions matter!

Ja, stimmt

By the way, if you are using an android GUI then you definately want to use the ShashChessGZ engine I mentioned earlier as it IS better than Stockfish 15.1 without a doubt simply because it is based on a much newer development version of Stockfish, and it has an .apk file after you unzip the package so it installs very easily.

get it here: https://github.com/amchess/ShashChess/releases/tag/GZ

Now you've got your front row of queens all directly attacked by at least one knight. Looks like another walk over for Black.
