Nice and simple. A matter of counting squares.

I assume 2.e4 is bad because of 2...Kb8, and the kin stops the pawn long enough to queen?
E4 actually ends in a draw because black can take the opposition by sacrificing his pawn. So, not only is it counting but e3 is necessary as e4 draws!

Great puzzle. Of course for the last move it works just as well is you underpromote to a rook. I'm going to track your content so that I can do the next puzzles as well.

How do I use Tals hypnotic stare on my opponents when playing chess.com? Any suggestions!?
A picture of your eyes. lol

politicalmusic I like your puzzles. they point out i really dont have the knack nor patient for end games. Either that or i am just not good enough at simple arithmetic. thank you.
Note: On the last graphic if white does not take the pawn, it wins because the black queen is lost after qd7, qc8, qa8, qb8
