Agreed! Undermines the whole point of doing puzzles. My top rating for puzzles has gone up by 600 points in a couple of days but it feels like cheating, without any real value.
Puzzle algorithm change?
Same here. Few days ago I was about 2600-2700 with hard puzzles. Now I just hit 3100 but this is no fun solving 15 in a row regularly with rating up to 1600....not sure what happened, but this is no good.
What I realize now is that the first puzzle is a hard one, then after that all become easy. So I exit after the first, and then go back and start again. This way I always get relevant puzzle...I have no interest in solving 1300 rated puzzles
Do you guys mean you're getting lower rated puzzles, or puzzles at the same rating are getting easier? I mean for example, is a 2000 rated puzzle still the same difficulty it was before the change?
It seems to me out of 30 puzzles I did today only 1 or 2 were even within 400 of my puzzle rating and only 1 that was above it (slightly).
Puzzle ratings were already a bit meaningless but it did give me a rough idea of how good my tactics were, and how well they were improving. If they've been changed to be completely meaningless that would be really disappointing.
I mean random example but if someone of previous 2200 strength can now get to 3500 without having actually improved at all, what is the point of putting any value in puzzle rating. Besides one where I mislicked one of the last moves I would have had 20 in a row today which just seems suspicious when recently I needed a lot of focus to just maintain my puzzle rating. And it would have been more like 25 if I didn't try to solve the other one I got wrong as fast as possible
For now I'm going to stop doing puzzles if it really has been changed, I don't want an artificially inflated rating, when I was trying to work my way up properly and could actually have a decent idea of the progress I was or wasn't making. I'm not sure why I'd get a puzzles 1400 points below my puzzle rating but none that are even close to my rating or above it. How it was before seemed to make way way more sense
Yes, chesscom recently changed their algorithm, and yes, it results in people getting easier puzzles. Just set your difficulty to “hard” and your puzzles will be more like they used to.

Thank you! Just realized this... they didn't advertise at all... it's a tick in the bottom right corner... ok, now I will suffer the frustration from falling from 3100 back to 2600 but at least puzzles will make more sense ![]()
For the last 4 months most of the puzzles I saw them only getting five points and when I Lose I'm losing anywhere from 10 to 21 points today I saw all five puzzles and the most points I got was eight! I haven't received 15 or 20 points for solving a puzzle in a long long time
I was looking if the mattered had been raised before creating a post, and I'm happy to see I'm not alone in this situation: I got +1000 ELO on puzzles just this week, and puzzles are absolutely not getting harder...
@Bobby-D-BG , How do you change the difficulty? I've been looking at all at all bottom right corners, I couldn't find it... Probably missed one (bottom right corner) XD

Ok found it! Thanks! Now slowly back to 2200 ELO with puzzles! (it's going to be a looooooong fall) ![]()
I solve the puzzles on PC, so it is when you open a new puzzle, then it is just underneath the "Hint" button.

Found it! Thanks!
I think it's a good feature, overall. A few problems I see, though:
1) If I get easier puzzles in general, it should be called "easy" mode, and not standard. The standard mode should be exactly the algorithm I had before the change.
2) It should've been better advertised. Direct messages and other announcements. Plus, I can't seem to find this option in the mobile app + the option in the desktop version is not easy to spot.
3) Since the difficulty is now customizable, the scoreboards related to puzzles are no longer relevant. Not even in the "friends" scoreboard.
Ok, let me put it in a summary as it seems puzzles are not what they used to be. When I started doing puzzles like 5-6 months ago, there was no hint "win a bishop" or "find a checkmate". Now with this hint it makes them significantly easier. Until about a week ago it was still OK as the puzzles were hard enough so I couldn't jump over the 2600 barrier consistently. Now with the easy mode I reach about 3100 and now I switched of to "Extra hard" mode as I'm not interested in setting a 65000 rating solving 1000 rated puzzles but funnily enough I'm able to maintain this new rating of mine.... I don't think I've become so much better at puzzles in the last week or so, so it means even with "extra hard" the puzzles are still easier than before. This may be a good advert trick to hook more people to puzzles as their rating will grow and they will have the feeling of making a progress... But anyway, it is what it is...
I wrote this on another thread - this new rating system is a joke. I have been grinding for months to a year to get to 3300 rating in puzzles IN THE OLD RATING SYSTEM . I had to actually SOLVE HIGH RATED PUZZLES. now every user can get to 3300 with only solving low rated puzzles. this makes the puzzle rating completely irrelevant and stupid. puzzle leaderboard has no meaning now. change it back to the way it was!!!! this is so frustrating.

Absolutely true...
Thanks to those who mentioned the "difficulty" setting, which I had not found. I'd also noticed that the puzzles had become so uniformly easy as to be worthless, unless your goal was just to collect 5 rating points at a time. I can't imagine what the admins thought was better about this than the previous version, but at least maybe I can start getting puzzles that might help me improve again.
Anyone else getting easy puzzles as of late? How do I change the algorithm back? Is this chess.com ‘s way of making people think they’re better than they actually are in-hopes of them playing more but ends up making ratings completely useless? Spamming easy puzzles for +5’s and I’m 3500 now, feels completely undeserved.
