Hi,
I've only been on here a few days and am new to chess and have been enjoying doing the puzzles. Some of the puzzles confuse me because the solutions don't seem to make sense, and I'm not sure if I'm missing something? I attached a photo of a puzzle I just got. I do rxe8. Black does qxe8. If I don't check black on the next move which I don't have the possibility of doing, then black can just go qe1 and it's checkmate for me. So I moved a pawn for my turn so my king isn't trapped. I failed the puzzle since that wasn't what it wanted me to do. The official puzzle solution was qxa8. This leaves my king wide open for the queen to checkmate me. But it doesn't. Instead black queen goes qxa8 so then I can capture it with bxa8. Why on earth would black queen do a move to get itself captured, when it can just checkmate me? Am I missing something obvious? I feel so stupid that I can't figure out what I'm missing. This has happened with a few puzzles where my opponent can do something much better, so I try to do what I think is the best move, but I get it wrong because the solution counts on the opponent doing something stupid. Are puzzles occasionally wrong or am I just too new that I don't see the reason why it won't checkmate me?
