This is a game I just finished. The tactics are near the end. Use them if you want to.

This is from a game I'm currently playing, and we're currently on turn 24 (4 on this puzzle).  It's a forced mate, but my opponent may not know this.  I'm not sure if you want forced checkmates, but here is one.  Any ways, the hard part is the second move, because taking the rook with the knight is very tempting.  This is actually what I had planned but realized the second move is much better.  I sat down at my board with pin and paper and worked out all possible moves.

Board is flipped since it's for black:

Probably my best mate so far, although it's technically not finished!

I don't think Kd1 is forced, so you might want to start with the Qxc4.

I know you were proud of that Knight move but it would've been a huge blunder.

3.Qc1# would've been the best move

Oops ... sorry I missed the Bishop! Good job :)

3...Qc1+ would have been the best move provided that white does not notice his bishop guarding c1 and believes he has been checkmated.

oops, thanks for that ... pesky bishops!

That means you lost the game!  :-p

What I just realized is that I left off the rook at a8.  So here is the diagram starting after Nxd3+.

mpapa

starting at move 28 Rxd7 this might be a cool mate sequence for a puzzle

first time I've inserted a puzzle, hope it works!

StrategicPlay

cflux, where's the tactic?

cflux

I dont know, is it not working? Or...are you saying it's too easy...

I think StrategicPlay is saying that there is not a good tactic in this puzzle.  I think if you continued it for a few turns, it'd be better.  The point seems to be the promotion.  I'm not sure if white can stop it or not.

Blackadder

Cflux :  this position is interesting. but we need more moves for everyone to understand the tactical implications of the position.

piphilologist

@blackadder 4...Qf6 seems simpler although your line is of course also an easy win. but the multiple winning moves mean that the tactic can't continue even if it did work.

StrategicPlay

Remember, in cflux's puzzle there is always a threat for a back-rank mate for Black.

Ya that's why 4...Qf6 forcing a queen trade is good

I think you are both misunderstanding each other.   if 3.Qf6 black mates with Qc8+ (this, I'm guessing, is what Stategic play is thinking about) whereas 4.Qf6 (instead of my suggested h6) forces Q-trades.

this does make your position tricky to make into a tactic cflux; cut it too short and its boring, make it longer and then there are several ways to win.  (e.g. 4.h6 and 4.Qf6 both work. the latter being the better)

Katona's made it clear:  puzzles with clear lines are what is need.

cflux

in the game he played 3. Qg3 which was in your anaylsis Blackadder (except I played 3...Qf1+ which I think is slightly better than 3...Qb4+)

do you have to go with the best line for the opponent?

edit: even so 3...Qb4+ or 3...Qf1+ would be seen as ambigouos.

Thanks.

On this occasion i think you are wrong to think Qf1 is better than Qb4 and I think objective assessment with prove I'm right. the reason is really simple: after Qb4+ ALL of the replies end up with the pawn promoting WITH CHECK.

If Qf1+ Kb2 you cannot simply promote due to Qb8+. instead you would have to play the line: h6 Qb8+ (nothing better) Kh7 ...any move...e8=Q

this line is longer and less forcing (still winning, of course)

cflux

Yes I see thanks for the explanation
