Qa9!! - A problem composition challenge

Sort:
danjcla

In their infinite wisdom, my high school students have decided to name their chess team "Qa9".

Can't lie, made me LOL IRL. 🤯

We're trying to compose a chess problem where, if the a9 square was allowed, Qa9!! would be a brilliant queen sac or something along those lines. But no luck so far.

So if anyone would have fun with this, please take the challenge!

The plan would be to put the problem on a T-shirt. You'd get a free copy of the T-shirt (customized with your name and arbitrary player number, and without the local highscool stuff) and if you'd like we could attribute the problem to your name on either all the shirts or just your shirt.

Cheers, -Danny, Maynard (MA) High School Chess Club and Team Organizer

But this is better

They aren’t too realistic, but they are legal

(I think)

For the second one, taking the queen off and switching to blacks move in analysis board shows a +8 for white, and if you can’t play Qa9, it shows M1
RealTactics960
M2* but still

Thanks so much! :-) Will let you know if we use any of these.

Qa9!! followed by a8=R+ and mate on the next move

White can just take the pawn and then he has mate in 10 or 11 moves. In order for a move to be brilliant, you can’t be able to checkmate without playing it. They are supposed to be hard to see moves that give a large advantage, usually sacs. It doesn’t give anything because you have mate another way. For example, in my second puzzle, black has +8 (as Qa9 isn’t legal) but if you remove the queen and switch it to blacks move (which is the same positioned Qa9 would give) it’s M2). That means Qa9 is the ONLY move that works.

Wait nvm my bad it said mate for black lol

Your puzzle is good

Came up with this.

7k/1Nq1r1pp/2P4N/3P3Q/2n5/5B1P/1B4P1/KR1R4 47.Rd1 Qa9+!

I then thought perhaps, something more glaringly obvious that Black is in serious trouble, if you have low level players. Or the kids may just prefer and enjoy something totally implausible.

7k/1Nq1r1pp/2P4N/1P4QQ/2n1B1Q1/7Q/1B6/KR1R4 56.Re1 Qa9+! (corrected fen)

Just a thought, perhaps a simple drawing on the wonky side may come across nicer than an image. If this appeals, perhaps contact the schools Art instructor and see if he/she would be interested in having her advanced students (because perspective is involved) come up with something, and the winner would receive a t-shirt. Of course you would be honor bound to accept one if they do it, no matter the outcome.

Whatever you decide to do, I would enjoy seeing the final outcome.

Edited to add : Sorry, not sure how to properly complete the Fen correctly.

Still, I think that #2 is nice.
