How can we be sure a 53.5 move game is the shortest possible? The least possible number of moves for the white men is two for the rooks, eight for the knights, four for the bishops, one for the queen, seven for the king, and 32 for the pawns. That gives a total of 54 moves, so James' game is indeed the shortest possible.
