Possible, but when the king runs to the d-file, you have to change course and check along the e-file.  If Rd3+, then RxR, and the stalemate trap is gone.  You have to follow a lot of different directions, and while I don't think there's a place for the king to hide, he can travel all over the board twice before you get to a repetition. 

Just checking along the g file is simpler and requires no thought to avoid letting the king hide somewhere.  It also gets you to a repetition more quickly since there only eight squares the black king can reach.
