Nice puzzle.  Was this from your actual game?

Hxg1(R) and Rxg1 seem to work too.

Are we supposed to write the answers here?  I thought that I was supposed to make the comment "easy" no matter how many attempts.

Yes - I had actually just gotten off of a long string of tactic trainer problems and literally forgot that I wasn't on TT until I saw the 'submit' button - because it felt more like a puzzle than a real game.

Yes, Jamie, you're right.....can I make multiple answers?

I was looking at the line, after black's 1... Rc8!

2. Nxh2+ gxh 3. Kxh2  and now the quick mate is gone.

Black still wins with Kg5 though

I remember looking at that line when I was trying to resolve it myself - but winning the minor piece is sufficient for the game since (as you indicated) there are immediate ways of stopping the pawn, and if White isn't going to promote, there's no justification of the sacrifice except to prolong everyone's misery.

I like your solution better.  Black has quite a bind on the white king.

Now move that adbanced white pawn up a square, and your problem takes on a whole new dimension.

After 2 Nxh2+ gxh2, 3 Rg6+ can still play for some tricks. It looks like she will be down a piece still, but black may still need to show a little technique to make sure she can eventually queen one of her pawns. It's certainly winning though.

I liked 1...Rh8, which seems to leave black up an exchange and a pawn after 2. Ne1 Kg5! (the rook is trapped) 3. Rf3 g2+ 4. Kxh2 Bg4+, when e6 will also fall. It's just about as good as 1...Rc8 2. Nxh2+ gxh2 3. Rxg6+.

However, 1...Rc8 2. Nxh2+ Kg5! wins all of white's pieces for nothing.

I love these real game problems!  I got so tired of figuring out odd soilutions in the Sunday Time column.
