Three Wrong Types

It’s White to move and enforce a selfmate in 4 moves. Promotion to any unit is allowed. Have fun solving!

How can you make a selfmate puzzle with white to play if there is no white king on your board?

That’s part of the joke-you must give yourself one! Promotion to any unit is allowed, as stated in the text.

Ah that's clever! not awake enough yet to read between the lines for me, sorry about that happy.png

RewanDemontay

No problemeo! Remember, it’s in four moves if you wish to solve!

Hmm I can't seem to picture any final checkmating position. Am I right in assuming that you can't promote into check(mate)? Not an easy puzzle for sure, but then again, I'm not very good at selfmates

RewanDemontay

Correct, you cannot promote into checkmate, since that breaks the rule that you. can’t place your king in check.

Unless it is your 2nd king wink.pngwink.pngwink.png

Am I correct in saying the first move is e8=K+? Black is forced to play Kh6 and can't prevent the ensuing selfmate pattern.

That is actually the second move.

I’m guessing three of the four moves have to be promotions to kings but still can’t get it...

There’s only one king promotion.

Some good misdirection with “three wrong types” then!

Sure! Here is the solution in white text for the curious: 1. hxg8=Pawn!+ Kg6 2. f8=King!+ Kf6 3. Ne4+ Ke6 4. d8=Black bishop! Bxe7#

A challenge: could you make a problem with 3 promotions to "nothing"? Or 2? I've seen it done for 1 promotion to "nothing" but more probably requires a repetitive device of sorts!

Smart puzzle!

That’s really good - I was trying to do the puzzle with those moves but couldn’t make the promotions work to find a self-mate on the fourth move: didn’t think about promotions to pawns or black pieces!

Well I did specify “any unit” for a reason. wink.png
