Except instead of 2 .... f1=Q, black could've played 2 ... g2+, followed by 3. ... f1=Q, gaining a queen and probably with mate to follow

yes, i did make this up, but the 12 checkmate here actually means try not to lose much material while mating black's king, black can stop the checkmate, but lost all his attacking power, that's what i meant about.
