As in the title "White to move and mate in 2 moves"

It means that white mate in two moves against any defence played by black.

In your example the move 1.Qb1 doesn't solve the problem because, as you explained, black can play 1...Nf6 and then it is impossible for white to mate in his second move.

There is other move, that allow white to mate in 2 moves no matter what black play in reply.

Awesome queen move! Very nice puzzle:

Qa6!

Not as cool as the original posting, but white mates black in 2 moves as well. Came across this puzzle in a book yesterday. Took me a while to figure it out.

Alright I got QB8!

1.QB5 qc6/qb6/qa6 2. rxh7#

1.QB5 rxh8 2.Qxb7#

What if Rb8 is answered by Rxh8?

Then how would you respond to Nf6?

teashare

1. Qa6.

Threat 2. Qb7, either as capture or not.

If 1. ... Qxa6, then 2. Rxh7. If 1. ... bxa6, then 2. Ra7.

If 1. ... Kf7, Black is taking the flight White gave him by moving the White Queen, but Qxb7 mates anyway.

zorba_ca

I'm going with Qa6.

Typical of Valentin Marin : queen sacrifice without a forced check.

Qa6

The correct answer is Rc8 Kxg3 Qc7#

I think it’s Qa6 then Qxb7#

That's one variation but white still mates: 2. Rxh7#
