camel bone, crystal, wood, stone, plastic, GOLD, diamonds
Wood you believe it! (Physical Construction)
They've skimped on the 'look and feel'. The pieces don't look very comfortable to play with.
There's a budget priced set here (http://www.ukgamesshop.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=chluset) - at only half a million pounds sterling as opposed to your 5 million pounds sterling.
Don't forget clay! some sets are made from earthly materials solidified & clay stands out as the most common.
Thanks for the updates. Just add a shopping link & a price - and we can all start claiming to have fancier sets than anyone else!

We’re getting down to the esoteric ones …
plastic may of different types (polythelene, polysterene, polypropylene, polycarbonate) - I have seen only polysterene, though...
Let's make the worlds first "The Amazing Human Body" Cadaver set. We can then tour the world with our set
Thanks for the updates.

We’re getting down to the esoteric ones …
NOW THE HARD PART - ordering by 'the most common, PHYSICAL material'. This is a fairly vague requirement. I had in mind: popularity in terms of number of chess sets manufactured worldwide.
Assuming WOOD is #1, and that elctromagnetic forms are excluded. Which material is in number #2 position?
If I had to make a wild stab in the dark, I 'wood' say: because it is puzzle and related to chess.
Ordering/sequencing by 'the most common, PHYSICAL material'. i.e. popularity in terms of number of chess sets manufactured worldwide.
Assuming WOOD is #1, and that electromagnetic forms are excluded. Which material is in number #2 position? #3? ...
The term puzzle (as a noun) has several related meanings:
It is not, I will grant you, a chess puzzle in the classical mould, involving the movement of pieces on the chessboard. Nevertheless, it seems to me to be a legitimate enquiry presenting a significant intellectual and investigative challenge.
Which forum category would you have put it in?
Here are my 10 top categories:
1. Wood , as 90% of sets are made of
2. Marble
3. Metal
4. Onyx, gemstone, you had under the more general category of stones
5. Bone, camel, ivory
6. Plastic
7. Ceramic
8. Composites, resinous agglomerates
9. Paper, papier maché
10. Electromagnectic, the future with 3D hologram on your computer screen
and who knows what?
What evidence can you produce to support your order of materials?
I would have assumed that plastic would be at #2. Indeed, according to this site (http://www.chesscentral.com/chess-set-tournament.htm), in tournament play - fine wood or high-impact plastic are the most common materials used.
The most common materials used in chess pieces are wood, plastic, pewter, glass, soapstone, and jade - according to this site (http://www.justchess.biz/collectingchess.htm).
This site (http://www.thechesszone.com/chess_pieces_materials_manufacture) implies wood -> metal -> marble are the commonest.
