I mean that there is love and consciousness doesn't change regardless of whether you see what you are as an individual soul or just a part of nature.

Ed 192. That's interesting. Does my view that I don't exist cause me to be unhappy? I have to admit I see the whole thing as being empty. I mean it's futile. In fact worse then futile. It's imagined.

I suppose right now I wouldn't say my view brings me happiness. That said it does leave me relaxed. There's nothing to be happy or sad about. There's nothing.

Sorry about my diatribe btw. I tend to react against the proliferation of unsupportable ideas. There is a bit of egotism in that, of course. We're all egotistic, otherwise we wouldn't be alive.

It occurs to me .... do you believe in determinism .... that not only do we have no free will but that even chance doesn't really exist and all our actions and thoughts, down to the merest detail, are exactly caused by previous states of the universe and we only have an illusion of free will and independence? That's an idea that became popular five years ago, due to the malign influence of various philosophy popularists. It seems to go with (correlate with) depressive illnesses, actually.

It seems to me, Tom, that you've had a major disaster that's impacted your life and from which you're recovering. I hope that guess isn't true, by the way. I wouldn't wish sadness on anyone. But if so, perhaps it's best to face up to loss than to deny the self that experiences it?

i think all this is like if we try to put a duck inside a bottle........how can we take it out of there?.......it is impossible because that situation it is impossible to happen......is like a paradox......

The making, of a 'ship in a bottle' - About, 5 or so, videos on "YouTube." ..{also, 'egg in a bottle'}.

Opti you're prolific. I want to read all and respond as I read as I feel.

Don't worry about what you say. Everyone is cool with me. I might have to catch up with you.

This type of thread does this. Explodes at times. It's the sort of thing I want to read. I like science but I love philosophy. And we all have a view.

This 'link' might seem, completely 'Out-of-place' - But, it's Really Not.. as it illustrates, uncommon, though Not 'unheard of' {negative}, major incidents, that occur, fairly regularly.. {including 'road rage'}.. That cannot, to my mind, be explained, solely be 'chemical processes' in our 'brains' - So much as, allowing oneself, to be influenced, by Negative, {if invisible}, 'energies'! ..Of which, 'ghosts' are merely, one known phenomena.

Opti 193. Interesting. Certainly Einstein knew things that have only recently been proven.

Same with the whole Higgs Boson thing. I like super symmetry.

Guys my science is appalling but I like wondering and I'd say to anyone that would like to contribute don't worry about what you don't know. We all have ideas.

Carolina 194. I think you did just fine. That chimes with my view. That actually life is very simple but we project complexity onto it.

All that's truly real is natural forces and natural materials naturally evolving.

All this adjective stuff such as beautiful, righteous, individual, we imagine all that.

Time is interesting. I think you're probably right. That time is a river. It's all happening now but only our consciousness is connected to a particular moment.

I suppose like America and England exist simultaneously perhaps yesterday and tomorrow and today all exist too.

I'm not sure. I believe hawking though when he says time did not exist at the point of singularity.

Things are different at the quantum level. Forget what you thought you knew!

Opti I don't think Carolina was calling her love Big Bang!

Opti 201.

Buddy I think your weakest argument against a multiverse was that uni means one. So what?! Bad wording you know.

It's interesting though this idea that we won't be able to experience other universes. I mean we can hardly experience everything within our universe. It hardly seems a good argument against it existing.

Carolina you mentioned would a sound exist without a listener? The vibration would exist but there would be no ear to detect and no brain to interpret.

I accept your point though opti that perhaps there will maybe be no observable evidence of other universes and I accept too maybe that if we could detect such a thing we could legitimately claim it as part of our universe.

My own view as to why the multiverse is probable is based on this.

Firstly within nature one is unusual. Insects, animals, planets, stars, galaxies. A plethora right? I expect that there is a finite but sizeable amount of universes.

I've never personally accepted the concept of infinity. I believe that everything is finite. Well materially speaking.

Reminds me of that question what is the universe expanding into?

Anyway the other reason I tend to believe that the multiverse theory is about right is that I think the point hawking makes about it takes a specific set of natural values to promote life sounds plausible. I think it's also plausible that there will be other universes without life.

But you know I have to accept your overall point really that I can't particularly say with any certainty what nature is. And maybe nature is about purely this universe.

It sounds a little egocentric so I doubt it but you never know.

The idea of all experience applicable to one human unit is the self. I can accept that terminology. It's a world away from identity but I can accept those words as factual. I agree my philosophy could reasonably be described as nihilistic. I don't accept the self exists in the conventional way believed. But nature. Animals. Creatures. Sure. I accept matter is present. Only that matter is affected by causality.

Let me ask you something opti.

Is there any part of what you class as you that you imagine to be separate from causality?

Your thought feeling behaviour. That you love.

Which part isn't constrained by cause and effect?

I believe you see yourself as a god. Along with most other people.

carolina have a wonderful few days and I hope all the songbirds fly with you

Avatar of Tomtalk
Opti 207. I concur. Absolutely egotism is a part of how we exist. What's cool though is we can understand that this doesn't mean we are separate from nature.

Think about it. Consider the implications of evolution. How could free will exist within that framework? It can't. All you think and feel happens entirely naturally and as a result of causality.
