Looks like it's indicating your normal high for this date is 22.4 C [72.3 F], which is still several degrees warmer than the temperature I set my house thermostats at during the winter. Cool

yeah our highs is pretty average except for yesterday (Monday)

TEN!  WEEKS!!  TILL PLUTO!!!

Cool

What's the temp on Pluto right now, about 400 below?

Avatar of Cystem_Phailure

I dunno, things have gotta be getting pretty hot on Pluto by now as they're making preparations for the flyby . . .

Avatar of Conflagration_Planet

It does have seasons. Smile

I was reading the Wiki article about Uranus the other day, which has  interesting seasons on account of being sideways.

A sideways Uranus?

I must have missed that lecture at med school. Innocent

It's almost time to start standing a watch. New Horizons has an unknown risk of colliding with debris as it performs its bullet flyby of Pluto in a couple months, but it has the ability to dodge some larger objects if they're known about in time. Starting May 11 there will be seven periods of 45 minutes each of observation by New Horizons' Long Range Reconnaissance Imager, looking for anything in the current flight path that might pose a risk. The final planned observation is on July 1.

The risk is unknown, but not trivial. After all, of Pluto's known 5 moons, 2 have been discovered since New Horizons was launched, so it seems likely that there may be other moons, debris, or even rings to scoot around that haven't yet been seen.

There are 3 options for alternative flight paths that can be invoked, with July 4 the last date to make any change to the flight path (closest approach is July 14). All the data gathered during the flyby will take months to send back to Earth, but New Horizons is scheduled to send back a slew of data 2 days before closest approach just in case there's some sort of collision that destroys the spacecraft when it enters the region of Pluto's moons.

Two days ago (Tuesday) the first proton collisions since the 2-year-long upgrade were conducted at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. These first collisions were at "low" energies in the GeV range. The collider is about halfway through its planned 8-week slate of tests since its start-up last month. High energy collisons are scheduled to start in June, and eventually, maybe next fall, collision energies of up to 13 TeV are anticipated.

Oughta be interesting. :)

A couple warm days here. Yesterday the station at the community college just 2 miles away reached 86 F , which topped the record high for the date (84 F) for the station at the Soo (~12 miles away). However, the station at the Soo attained only 79 F yesterday, and so didn't set a record. Some communities down below the Mackinac bridge, including Pellston, did have record highs for the date.

But this is the U.P.

Forecast highs for this coming Monday and Tuesday are 53 F and 46 F, respectively. Cool

I don't want to rush the summer, but I'm already curious to see how close to October 21 the first day of snow arrives in the Soo.

New Horizons began ultraviolet observations of Pluto today.

New Horizons is now close enough to Pluto that if you were onboard you should be able to see Pluto with the naked eye.

Entering the second week of May there's still some ice in Lake Superior, but it's getting down to the last dregs.

I'm guessing Pluto will look like the moon.    UndecidedWe'll see.

Pluto's showing a fair amount of albedo variation over wide areas in the earliest blurry photos, but then again, so does the moon.
