A tad chilly

Carbondale, Illinois, is one of the eclipse places to be this century. They had 2 minutes and 38 seconds of totality yesterday and will have 4 minutes and 8 seconds of totality during the 2024 eclipse.

so, to that, wifey and i were visiting family in chicago, and i considered driving everyone south to carbondale to see it. however, dad is only 3 weeks removed from heart surgery, and, even as a retired meteorologist, he wasn't up for it.

in the chicago area there was considerable cloud cover. the only noticeable difference was the temperature drop.

You know your day's probably going to get worse when . . .

That's quite a drop in pressure.

that hurricane intensified quickly.

i hope this is not another katrina, with absence at the helm...

one of the things i have noticed living in florida the past few years is that some people have the perception of, another hurricane, oh, well.

i think deaths linked to hurricanes are directly tied to events where people either look at worst case scenarios, or, don't pay attention.

i hope those in the path of it have made arrangements.

Yeah, I saw one article that said the Mayor of Rockport told people who refused to bug out that they should write their names on their arms with Sharpie pens to make it easier to identify their bodies.

A day before landfall the forecasts were warning that this hurricane would stall in place as soon as it came ashore, unlike most that dump their water but continue moving on. 18 hours after landfall that's still the prediction. One model shows that by 5 days from now the center will still be only about 250-300 miles past the landfall point. The same areas are going to keep getting rain for several days straight.

Tsk tsk . . . no outer railing on open staircases. That's gotta be some sort of code violation, even in Texas.

Even weather is on a large scale in the States.

Wow-- 106°F in San Francisco yesterday. Their "normal" high T for September 1st is 70°F . Lots of other cities/towns in the region topped 100°, including two at 111°.

And yet somewhere in the world lurkes a particle of moisture so infinitismal in the grand scheme of things and yet destined to be an experience for a totally unique character living in the Soo.  That piece of moisture yet to rise in evaporation into the wild blue sky, drift over Michigan, get chilled and swirl about only to be the first snowflake of the season to touch down on CP one nano second before all the others, sending his heart a pitter-pattering with joy for the season he loves best!

irma is a helluva storm. last year i was able to stay through matthew. as of now, wifey and i have 4 different plans for evacuation. totes packed if we drive. flights where we have the insurance if we need to cancel. and i'm in central florida.

Joseph-S

Hope you two manage to stay safe and that all your stuff comes through ok.

Irma does seem likely to pay a visit to your vicinity, so I'm glad to hear you've got plans in place to get your golf clubs to safety if needed. This could end up being one of the nasty hurricanes that slams the islands, the southern part of Florida, and a couple Gulf states beyond Florida. Drat. Double post.

Cystem_Phailure

I guess it's too early for rainfall forecasts, but it doesn't (yet) look like Irma is going to take up residence in one spot for a few days like Harvey did.

I was near Cancún once, at the hotel they were still repairing the damage one of those made some days before.
