A tad chilly

BTW, the day after Erie got pounded with their snow, the Porcupine Mountains region in the western UP got 72 inches of snow in 30 hours. They're expecting another 24-30 inches over the next day or so.

Half an hour ago, about 2:45 p.m. local, I ventured out to the road to get the mail. The temperature was (-6)°F [-21.1°C] .  It looks like that's the high for today. How about the rest of you? Al's probably wearing long pants on the golf course this week.

Tomorrow will be similar to today, though tonight and tomorrow night are expected to be quite a bit colder than last night (only got down to (-11)°F).

Pulpofeira

Well... 9º C/49º F right now. Mostly clear.

Earlier this afternoon the temperature at the Soo airport climbed above freezing for the first time since December 19th. To be precise, it was a stretch of 21 days and 21 hours below freezing. There were two days with highs of minus 3°F, and 6 nights with lows below -14°F. We've got one more day of melting coming tomorrow (with rain to boot) and then it's back down to single-digit highs for Friday and Saturday.

Here's the chart for this latest below-freezing span:

Round here the temps went up by 70F in two days. Seems like we always get a couple days of spring that get lost and show up in January.

Cystem_Phailure

A 70°F swing is impressive! I just got about half of that in the opposite direction when the 2-day thaw ended: yesterday it was 48°F, and today's high has been 8°F.

RonaldJosephCote

Yeah, Massachusettes has the same. Sun it was  -20 below, today its 50. happy.png

Cystem_Phailure

We got 0.42 inches of rain during our brief thaw yesterday. Rain for you too RJC?

Elan Musk has a very powerful rocket blasting off today at 1:30E.S.T in Florida.

Cystem_Phailure

Yeah, that's 3 minutes away now. I hope they get this thing up in orbit properly. The original scheduled test launch was back in 2013.

RonaldJosephCote

My local news---New England Cable just said it went up with no problem. Did the booster rockets come back down and land upright..??        (EDIT);   Nevermind NBC said yeah, 2 rockets stuck the landing.  That's such a weird sight to see a red Tesla and a fake dummy flying around mars with David Bowie in the background.  I can see the aliens now going  WTF.?surprise.png

I haven't mentioned much about snow this winter because there haven't been any big events here. In fact, there haven't even been any medium events. Not a day so far (and I'm talking about calendar dates here, not 24-hour spans) on which the Soo recorded 6 inches or more of snow, and only 3 days with 4 inches or more.

Still, the total snowfall to date for this winter is 84.5 inches, and that's less than 10% below the long-term "normal" for mid February, meaning this is pretty much a normal year. Just slow and steady accumulation, rather than episodic with standout storms.

AlCzervik

today, we're in the mid 60's. two days from now, the forecast is for snow.

Cystem_Phailure

Yeah, this is a mess. Gaylord NWS says we may get 4 inches of snow/sleet this afternoon, another 5 inches tonight, and another 4 inches tomorrow.

i saw that, too, cp. this year is an unusual "spring" for many.

i'm waiting to see if any mlb teams schedule doubleheaders to make up for so many cancelled games.

Cystem_Phailure

No weather cancellation for the Boston marathon in its history, though today was probably tough-- 25 mph winds, temps in the 30s and 40s, and pelting rain.

Cystem_Phailure

That was an impressive storm for April. Amazingly, the area of about a 15-20 mile radius around me got less snow than just about everywhere else, but I still got a foot or so. The Soo recorded 6.7" yesterday, after a couple initial inches the day before. South of here by 50-100 miles there were recorded amounts well over a foot. And Green Bay got socked with more than 2 feet of snow and 50 mph winds.

I'll see if I can get a good photo up later. The snow was wet and heavy, and it's really loaded up on the trees. Sometimes you can get a foot of dry snow and it doesn't look like all that much, but this looks like a lot of snow on the ground and trees right now.

Cystem_Phailure

BTW, the Soo's total snow for April so far is 26.2 inches. Normal by this date in April is 4.7 inches.

AlCzervik

don't worry, cp. you should reach 50 degree temps sometime in august.
