Re. 'Tom's preceding, observation - I think you're probably, if metaphorically, 'splitting hairs' Tom.

I'll state it another way.. Contributors, are also welcome, to contradict me, {in any way they choose}.. And, barring very long 'copy-and-paste' articles.. {of which, they're entitled to, the '3 strikes' & you're out' rule}.. You'll find me, a quite patient 'op'! ..True! ..{even 'HW' is welcome to post his semi- dri___!}.  [ :

Nice idea Ed. I hope you enjoy it here. I can't watch the news. Paul Simon said it. Why am I soft in the middle? Rest of my life is so hard.

A, 20 plus minute video-link, to a 'street preacher' {preachers?}, in 'Seaside', Oregon, last 'July 4th' holiday.

I guess you could call him, an 'In-Your-Face' evangelist! ..But, if it evens things out, so are some of his, rhetorical 'pov' opponents! - Thankfully, I was already permanently 'settled' last 'July' 4th..In my New 'digs'.. 18 miles, further North!  [ :

Oops, In lieu of a working "YouTube" link.. You'll need to type-in, {on 'you tube's, mini-search-engine}, "Seaside Oregon, street preacher" <- {it's both 'wild' & at times, confrontational !}

On Poker: Players tend to follow typical poker learning curve

As the parent of a 9-year-old daughter, I find it interesting to compare her school lessons with the types of things I learned at her age level. I'm admittedly dumbfounded by this new method they use to teach math nowadays, but more often than not, the lessons are parallel, despite my being 31 years removed from the fourth grade.

The same goes for poker: Everybody sort of picks up the game following the same small steps. Here's the typical five-point learning curve:

Position: It's the foundation of everything in poker. The action moves around the table in a clockwise manner, and the more people who act before you, the better off you are. If you are seated at an eight-handed table and four players have folded in front of you, you can gauge the strength of your hand against three opponents instead of seven. If you are first to act, you'd better be extremely confident that you have the goods and enter pots only with traditionally strong hands. The best seat is the button, which is the prime position for stealing blinds and the last to act in following betting rounds. The worst seats are the small- and big-blind positions, which act first after the flop.

Start with limit: The $2-$4 limit Texas Hold 'em games are poker's version of the children's nursery. Nearly all of the poker rooms spread the game, and it's an affordable way to pick up the game without risking too much money. A bad night at $2-$4 will set you back only $100-$200, and you can regularly play for hours on end with a single buy-in.

Bet sizing: There's some wiggle room with this concept as your game advances, but if you do venture outside of limit poker, make sure to keep your bet sizes consistent. A decade ago, conventional wisdom was three to four times the size of the big blind. So if $8 was your opening bet in a $1-$2 no-limit game with 10s-9s, the same bet should be made when holding Kh-Kd. Consistency allows you to disguise your hand range.

Stealing the blinds: Every poker player has to drag an occasional pot to keep his or her head above the slow chip declines that come with the rake and forced blinds. The easiest way to do this is to steal the blinds and buy yourself a free orbit around the table. This is especially important in tournament poker, where the levels can quickly increase and price you down from a medium to a short stack.

Defending the blinds: With your forced money committed to the pot, you can't consistently allow your chips to move to another stack without occasionally putting up a fight. This is even more important if the same player(s) are bullying you. The first big move you will learn is the concept of "re-stealing" the blinds, where instead of calling or folding a bet, you are firing back a sizable raise in hopes of inducing a fold.

This can win you a lot of free money, because it forces a huge range of hands to fold. You just have to make sure it's large enough to price the opponent out of the hand. A good rule of thumb is to bet out the size of the pot, including the size of the opening bet. In a tournament situation, moving all-in with 20-25 big blinds when you think your opponent is weak also can do the trick.

Brazil crisis: Four orchestras face closure

December 18, 2016 by norman lebrecht

A correspondent reports:

The collapse of the Brazilian economy and government has led to savage cuts in culture. Four big orchestras are facing shutdown. The Orchestra Sinfonica Brasileira (OSB, pictured) has not paid musician salaries or soloist fees since August.

Three more orchestras – the Banda Sinfonica, the jazz sinfonica and the orchestra do teatro san pedro have been told they will close next year. Hundreds of musicians will be out of work.

You can sign a petition to save three of the orchestras here.

The OSB is conducting a separate campaign.
