I agree about the emoticons. They remind me about the simplyfied language in 1984, with less room for complex feelings and thoughts. There's also a clear inflation in the use of smiley faces. A message without smiley faces will often come across as more hostile than what's meant.

I think we lose a lot in communication via writing on the net Ersten. We do not see one another's faces, do not pick up on the tonality of the voice, do not know the real emotion behind what is said. It is a diluted form of communication & a lot gets lost in translation.

Well, is writing online so different from snail mail? I recently read letters from around 1914-1918, it was amazing, the amount of dignity that followed their words, the beautiful handwriting, I just loved everything about it. I would say we have lost something.

1914-1918 the World War 1 period. Lost something? Or become less repressed emotionally? It is an interesting idea as the social ethos has certaintly changed since that period. However, I think there are both pros & cons centered around that.

I've found that the most important thing in remaining calm is not to worry .

I think in general to be mindful is to be calm and compassionate .

I heard an analogy the other day which is astute .

Hold a glass in your hand for a minute it's no problem but for an hour it's hard to bear .

I find that losing your temper can be a disorder .

The more you worry about it , the less mindful you are , the less temperate you are .

The name of this thread is here to discuss these issues Tom.  Post 71 here with the fella manically battering away at the keyboards is probably what a few of the authors on other threads are like.  They think that they're trolling, I presume, but the reality is they look absolutely ridiculous.  The more bile they hurl the more everyone can see what twisted people they seem to be.  They don't seem to realise that they have hooks in their mouths Laughing

....and I don't know if anyone else noticed, but they're all the 'Right' politically.  I've noticed over the years when people like that can't win a debate they resort to insults and smears.  Interesting eh?

Tell that to the millions slaughtered in that period.

Kaynight highlights a good point here, 38 million casualities during that period. And you could get shot in the head by your own officers for not going over the top. The insanity of trench wars during that period was unprecedented too.

It was Norwegian letters. Norway was neutral during World War 1.

Hooked and landed I would say FP. Gutted by their own words so to speak.

Gallipoli a great example of the attitude that the ruling class had for the squaddies.

Ah well, that goes back to the mis-communication part that I mentioned then. What in your opinion have we lost then Ersten?

My point is, we often think that faster is better. That is not the case when it comes to interaction between humans. And it's certainly not the case when it comes to how we think, and how we express ourselves.

I would agree with that. Are you going to elaborate?

Avatar of Estren

No. It's fucked up.

Avatar of Nikprit

oh wow....that is the elaboration Ersten?

To all you anger philosophers:  I repent.  My anger volumn is at a steady 8 until I come on chess.com and see people use that stupid f----ing smiley face.  I hate the smiley face.  It reminds me of an guy that uses it at the end of every post he makes in the BFG for vote chess.  The smiley face is plain stupid and childish and it raises my anger volumn to 11.  So, let's see how many people now use it just to make me angry.  Have a bad day!  And why isn't there an emoticon for the middle finger?

AT LAST! It isn't just me after all! Yeah I don't like smileys either, even though I'll occasionally (very occasionally) use one myself.

What I really dislike though is when people punctuate their LaughingKiss text with multiple FrownCoolTongue Out smileys, I mean what KissFoot in MouthInnocentMoney Mouth are they, UndecidedWinkTongue Out fukken 12 Surprised years Yell old or InnocentCryCoolSealed summat?

It's not only difficult to read, it's a bloody eyesore! I resolve that henceforward I will never, ever use of these damn things again. Ever.

.........

That said though, there are plenty of things in this world that are surely more worthy of our despair than emoticons?

Surely? Wink

Hold on Ghosty - you will frighten Ron (RJC) away. We like Ron CoolSealedWinkFoot in Mouth despite his overuse of smileys. WinkLaughingInnocent

And Ersten is not happy with them either but we like him as well, despite post 184 SealedYellEmbarassed

As for the other guy Mr. Ping - I suspect he is a cameo poster.

What happened to free speech & free smiley rights?

Avatar of Ghostliner

Hmm, yeah that's a good point actually.

Maybe I should have toned #187 down a leetle, don't wanna upset Cap'n Cote.
