Appropriate "OFF TOPIC" topics?

When I first glanced at the locked topic below I thought the title was "Do you believe in Belgium?"
Outrageous!! Of course NOT!!!!!
No wonder the topic was locked, it is absolute madness to even consider the concept...
Belgium indeed!
Pah!!

Anyway, I do however agree with the ban on the other two topics. There are plenty of places on the web to have these punch-ups and it would only drag this site down. The other site I frequent also has the same ban for years and it has worked well.
Ban discussions of Belgium too, I reckon...

Its a pity such interesting topics as Religion and Politics have to be inflammatory because I found the postings to be quite entertaining and educating as well.  Don't know if they were meant to be or not.  I agree with Erik that whatever interferes with the buidling up of the community spirit has to go.  That's wise.  Isn't there a Moderator here?

Guiness is a wonderful beer, no doubt, with possibly the best head, and is proof of Ireland's elevated status. The world own England a debt of gratitude for inventing India Pale Ale. The complex Belgium Ales are renowned, as are the old beers of Germany. But the United States, in my somewhat prejudiced opinion, has the most diverse, exciting and innovative craft beers in the world .... bar none.

Thank You, back to beer (as oppossed to bashing the Russians). Yeah, India Pale Ale. It feels like its 100 degrees here in San Francisco (Erik in Menlo Park is probably sitting in 100 degree weather) and there's nothing like a cold beer on a hot night. I'm going to go get me one! Yeah!!

oh, San Francisco has Anchor Brewery! They make an excellent American Pale Ale called Liberty (of course).

Female,loves beer and chess,,,,,,,I've been searching for you my whole life (;

Anchor makes the BEST Porter and the best brew pub hands down goes to McMinnimums in Troutdale Oregon. They also have the coolest hotel and a wicked little distillery!

The beer up here in Québec is the best in Canada!

i once sat down for a match with a guy who had a russian looking name, so i asked if he was russian. "no " he barked back, "i'm chechen" and proceeded to scowl at me for the whole of the match. when i asked for a draw under the 3 fold repetition rule he stormed off and his club never saw him again. which goes to prove that even face to face religion and politics dont mix, let alone on a website.

My Birthname was Yanchunis and after my parent's divorced she changed to her maiden name, Patterson. Yeah, the Russians can take their games a bit seriously. However, the majority of the Russian players I know are relaxed when playing and tend to bee good conversationalists. Not to mention there are snotty players from every group. There's nothing worse than a chess enthusiast that acts like a "butt" and defaces the game with such behavior!

Whew!

I thought for a moment you wre going to say sex.

i have to agree with erik that there has to be a limit to the topics posted on forums.
Hugh_T_Patterson
Yes, there has to be a limit no matter how that might trample you feelings regarding free speech. Again, I've seen to many good sites brought down by such issues. There was a music site I was part of and finally quit (very publically) because it turned into a childish spitting contest between individuals otherwise deemed as adults. This is too good an opportunity for all of us and we shouldn't have it turned into a, for lack of better terms, pissing match. Everytime, I walk away from this topic, I come back, it's like a car crash. You can't help but look. We should have a beer only forum!
King_William
The perfect off topic, topic would be the Bond Movies. It has all the elements; Alcohol & sex, an American and some Russians (great correlation with some of chess history's big guns (no pun intended)) action, suspense, drama and finally and unexpected ending plot...

All the political , religious stuff is very interesting and sometimes fun to debate.  But I just don't think this is the site for it.
Kingarther

since every body is talking about NOT talking about RELIGION and POLITICS.

i would like to talk about beer, or sex, or cars but as i never get any of the three i will end there

I find it most interesting that that erik intoduced the topic of religion and politics in order to caution us that these topics should not be discussed.

yes. this was in response another post and many messages from users. (see http://www.chess.com/forum/view/off-topic/do-you-believe-in-religion). why does it matter anyway? it kinda sounds like you are accusing me of something? :)

Samantha

I can assure erik it is of no matter and I do not accuse him of anything.

I simply found it interesting that he took the trouble to start a thread introducing two subjects which he cautions against discussing.

Hardly logical, I would have thought. :-)
