I understood him to mean by "forbidden term" the reference to religion, the forbidden topic, and not a slur against the Cathloic Church, which he seemed to hold up simply as a benchmark of conservatism.

Thanks batgirl, that were my exact intentions.

My friend, its your site and you can make the rules like you choose, but I suspect you are gonna have a hard time enforcing those rules especially with big numbers of very diverse people, with very diverse ideas, frequenting the site.

I typed chess.com in my browser and that is how I found this site. I came here to play chess and found myself getting into quibbles with a 20 year old philosophy student, and his mates, over issues and people that are distant to me... Really silly of me.

Hopefully Erik and his team can get the live chess up and running soon, because that is the format of internet chess I really enjoy. The topics I have tracked in the Off Topic Section I think I'm gonna give a skip.

How about dividing off-topic into "religion and politics" and "insipid"

Why isnt there a feline forum here? Wink
batgirl
because cats have too short an attention span to keep up with the postings.

Erik,    Certaintly religion and politcs would be considered to be off the topic of chess . And almost any topic has the potential to be offensive to some .So why not disguss religion or politics in the off topic forum . I'm interested in what people who play chess might say concerning religion or politics . Shall there be censorship on chess.com ?

yes, there will be censorship on chess.com :) no politics, no religion. why? because people seem to be unable to behave properly when discussing those two topics. this is a chess website. there are plenty of places to talk about religion and politics online. just not here. :)

Erik , Fair enough , this site is private property . Therefore I will not disguss either religion or politics . I just enjoy playing chess against people from around the world . Thank You for designing this site!

Yes, there are some people who like to spew childish insults whenever they're losing an argument.

Are we allowed to discuss the big bang theory and evolution but leave out creationism? What about gay chess players? They may be offensive.

I actually like visiting chess sites and debating off topic issues with the members. Chess prople are very intelligent and conversationally savvy!

I vote for creating a forum for politics and one for religion. I come here for socialization AND chess. Well, chess first.

I agree with chessdweeb, one forum for politics and one for religion(or maybe one that has both since they are often linked) but they must stay within said forums.  Personally I don't think that they can get any more offensive than what I have read on the Bobby Fischer sites.  Also some questions which are not religious or political in principle (evolution and global warming) often have religious or political overtones.  It seems like a bad idea to bar these topics altogether.

erik
they are not banned topics, but they are for the OPEN DISCUSSION group forums

Would someone please point me in the direction of the contraband OPEN DISCUSSION group forums.

you should create a group or something who wants to talk about stuff like religion and polotics

Staff, there are all kinds of different subjects here, but Christianity is singled out as something bad. There are chess players that also like Christianity.  Just because you don't like Christianity is not a legitimate reason to remove it . The ones that mostly cause bad inter action are atheists. Warn and then kick them off. I with drew my Diamond membership because of the hatred for Christianity. Christianity is the best thing that has ever happened in this country. Because of ignorance it has received a lot of bad publicity. Removing them is the same as banning them.
