audio books vs reading?

Are audio books legitimate when answering the question, "What are your favorite books?" or does actually reading the book only count as legitimate?  :-)

I'd say audiobooks count.  I don't have a problem with that, assuming that you actually listened and can review the material with someone.

I would say audio books count.

I found when I was commuting an hour a day, I loved to listen to audio books.  It really helps the time pass.  Reading books is more fun and you can read a half hour or hours at a time.

I would say audio books do count though.

I listen to audio books while driving on long trips.  They keep you listening actively better than music and I believe they make distance travel safer.

Of course they're legitimate.  What other option is there?  Illegitimate??

i find i get a better since of how the author wanted the reader to see what he/she was trying to convey.  i seem to get more out of them.  but certainly there are books that should be read (information vs entertainment).  lee

Of COURSE audio books count! Sadly, though, listening to books on tape (or CD) doesn't help with spelling, which seems to be getting worse and worse these days. I, for one, prefer to visualize the word on a page, but have "read" many a book on longer trips on tape.

Too, it's a wonderful way for the blind to acquire knowledge and acquaintance with good literature. They do have braille, but I'm sure that audio tapes (or CD's) play an increasingly greater role in their education.

listening allows me to use my imagination more.  reading seems to slow the process down for me.  here is the thing, i want to listen to fiction and i want to read non-fiction.  :)

Reading a physical book and listening to the audiobook are two distinct avenues that lead to the same destination. Each generates differing memories and experiences, but neither is worse or better than another.

On reading: “If you read something, you’re taking a look at symbols onto a webpage, and your mind is actively filling in all of the blanks. Much like the sounds of the listeners, the spectacle, the inflection, the deeper significance, the storyline, etc.”

About audiobooks: “Since you can not go back and reread something, you are a lot more inclined to do a much better job of attempting to pull the gist of what someone meant when you are hearing them than once you are studying.”
