Some composers seem to fade away a bit as time goes by and yet they may have written beautiful music that deserves to be heard more often. I see that over on YouTube they have a clip featuring Joachim Raff's Symphony 8 in A Major ( entitled: Sounds Of Spring ), a very nice piece of music. Raff was from Switzerland and lived from 1822 to 1882.

Ok guys let's load up the cannons now ! Yup we want to hear the 1812 Overture ( Tchaikovsky, May 7th, 1840 ).

Oh Oh, I nearly forgot an important name ! Two great names for May 7th ( Johannes Brahms in 1833 ).

Please google..Charlie Drake 1812 overture..and enjoy!

---   Thanks a lot for the info Kaynight, I had not seen that clip before, very very funny. Of course most people my age might remember Drake from his hit song " My Boomerang Won't Come Back ", quite a cute number that one.

Thanks for the post Kaynight. I hate to be the one to bring forth bad news however I'm afraid that none of us are getting any younger   lol.

So what piece of music should I listen to on this day ( May 22cnd ) ? Only one piece will do: " The Ride Of The Valkyries " of course ! Yes May 22cnd of 1813 was the big day for Richard Wagner. Movie fans who might not listen to Classical music as a rule might however remember this piece as the theme used during the helicopter attack in " Apocalypse Now ".

In this crazy, sick world, it is a GOOD thing to be old, so the fact that we are not getting any younger is perceived as GOOD news by the likes of me.

As for Wagner -- how true the saying "Wagner's music is better than it sounds." I am always mesmerized by it. I just LOVE his long, drawn-out harmonies! And yes, he had his brisk moments, such as in the "Ride of the Valkyries."

@Snapdragon - finally somebody who gets it. We used to respect age. Now we worship youth, and age is openly mocked at sometimes.

We do have a name for today going back to 1810: Robert Schumann.

June 11th, 1864 was the big day for Richard Strauss.

Igor Starvinsky is the name for today, June 17th ( back in 1882 ).

Today is Friday but it could also be "Gustav " Day ( as in Mahler, born on July 7th in 1860 ).

Recently the song " El Condor Pasa " was mentioned in another thread. Most of us remember the beautiful version of the song as done by Simon & Garfunkel however other acts have recorded this song as well. Andre Rieu & the Johann Strauss Orchestra do a very nice version of " El Condor Pasa " as does the great Placido Domingo.
