Van Gogh’s particular health issues have been attributed to many things from epilepsy to bipolar disease to gonorrhea or syphilis. The truth is unknown for sure but that it was probably a combination of things. It is almost certain that he suffered from some form of lead poisoning as any paints from that period contained varying degrees of lead in their formulas and which he could have gotten just by handling the paints and not necessarily having to ingest them.
