Just been reading this. I remember my brother mentioning the song but can't remember what he said. My favourite black American entertainer is Leadbelly.

Leadbelly is indeed a gem.

I reported the author of post #17 who, hopefully, will be removed for racism and verbals.

Doesn't matter. He'll just return with a new name and the same old hatred. It's the chess.com revolving door policy -- the one that refuses to put severe limits on new accounts, making all this not just possible, but inevitable.

That's him. Green Corn.

Lead Belly died in 1949, but has had a lasting impact.  Like BB King

My younger brother Red introduced me to Leadbetter. I was immediately captivated. The purity and emotional intensity of his voice was something very palpable and real. There were others and I have a few records by various ones but he is unsurpassable. A murderer too. I think his sentence was reduced when he sang for the governor.

Leadbelly died of the most dreaded disease, ALS. This means that he'd probably been unable to play or sing for years before his death.  And he wasn't that old either, just 61.  Meanwhile Woody Guthrie was suffering from the debilitating Huntington's Disease, another untreatable neurological disorder.   Ledbetter influenced generations of folk musicians.  While no one had any more authority or right to sing the blues than Huddie, his songs didn't really fall into that category any more than his friend Blind Lemon's songs really belonged in that category, unless one does a little stretching and retrofitting.  Now, Leadbelly's 12 string guitar technique is unique and legendary and may have influenced some blues guitarists.

Thanks. That was actually one of the songs mentioned by the experts. Black-Eyed Susan boards a ship looking for her lover.  I can't see any direct relation between that Susan and our Susie other than the closeness in the names.  Plus the old song in a lament while the new one in a dancing tune.

Thanks for the re-post.  What In saw was black on dark gray.

Refers to a racist commenter whose post, maybe even account, was reported and deleted.
Un-confused now?

I loved Sandy Denny but she sadly fell off a ladder and is no more.
