Question - would you watch the Movie / TV series first, then read the books, if the shows piqued your interest. Or read the books first. I would watch then read, as you would have a fair idea of plot, and can put a face to a character when reading it.
I completely disagree with you the whole point of a book is when they dicribe the character you can be imaginative and imagine what the character might look like. I would definitely read the book then watch the movie.
