Perhaps you can use it as a timing mechanism (to pause the machine perhaps).
Have the screw wind down before starting the nest phase of the chain reaction.
The screw doesn't have to fasten anything necessarily, does it?

Go on the Internet and look up Rube Goldberg. He used to draw cartoons of these machines.
i counldn't find one with a screw
what about like a domino sort of thing...
