Chat points should replace profile views.

When I first joined in the summer of 2023, there were no dumb profile views. There were always chat points that were displayed on your profile. Chess.com should reconsider its decision to revert to that layout. Let me explain why:

First, what are chat points?

Chat points track how much you post, pretty much.

You get one chat point for posting on the forums, blogs, or articles, and I believe on the daily puzzle comment section.

You get two points for publishing a blog or article.

And finally, you receive 5 points for posting an announcement in your club.

To summarize all of this, your chat point would be all of these added up. Chat points being displayed show how active a member you are on the social side of the site, and it is a fun way to see how much you post.

Profile views just track how many times your profile is clicked, limited to one view per user, per day.

Chess.com seems to like to have something social displayed on the profiles. Over the last year or so, it’s been profile views. If chess.com insists on displaying something that showcases the social side of chess.com, it should be chat points, and not profile views.

Chat points are much better for profiles, since they highlight how active a member you are in the social side of chess.com. They could encourage activity from members who wish to grow their chat point count. Those who are curious about how much they’ve posted can easily check their profile and check. There is no reason why chat points aren’t better for the site than profile views. Profile views only show how many people are clicking your profile, and it all turns into an unnecessary competition.

Chat points should, and hopefully will, replace profile views sometime soon.

I don’t expect any change to happen from this thread, and am simply sharing my thoughts. Feel free to share your opinions here if you’d like.

And of course…

Keek!

This sounds like a great idea

Here’s my idea- let’s remove elo! People are too competitive, saying they’re better because their elo is higher, no elo

Why is this in off topic and not site feedback?

I've never liked profile views anyway, and I think it would greatly benefit the site to display chat points like they did just two years ago. I'm not even sure why they changed it.

Because chess.com won't change anything from a thread anyway. This is more for a discussion between everyone to see how people feel about the idea.

I mean, I’ve always wanted to know since I’ve been on 24/7 😜

Yeah, you need 10000 chat points to receive the Chatterbox achievement.

That's also a good point. It could help you see how close you were to achieving megaphone and chatterbox. There are no achievements for profile views, yet they're displayed...

Yeah, I've never really liked that. I see no reason why chat points aren't better for the site than profile views. Maybe I'll ask Martin or Atti about it.

I would be interested to see both. I never saw the chat points, only the profile views, but I think both have uses.

What's the positive use of profile views?

Making you feel popular

But will make you desperate.

I think profile views are useful for seeing how much of an audience you have. (Being able to see followers also helps) When you write blogs or other things and you're trying to increase your audience, then it's helpful to see how many people view your profile on a daily basis.

Followers and friends are a much better metric, since they're the ones who get notified if you post and are more likely to post on your blogs, threads, or whatever else.

Good idea

Yes, followers would be a very good thing to know.
