I'm not really sure. No one is. But they have an idea, but I'm not sure what it is. A very long time though. . .
The modern rules and pieces we play with were established in 1475
According to some books I have been reading recently the first recorded mention of chess is around 500 to 600 A.D. So it figures 2000 years isn't out of line
