You said "this will be a serious discussion about the relationship between cryptography, chess..." so if you are still interested, I developed a web app where you can actually encrypt a text message and convert it into a chess board, where the pieces are positioned according to a password that you enter.

Actually, this will be a serious discussion about the relationship between cryptography, chess, and chess players' involvement in creating codes for the intelligence community.
For instance, "Hut 6", and "The Golf Club Club and Chess Society" in WWII (and more), mentioned in the exellent article by billwall, which covers a lot.
