Coins, Metal Detecting, and Treasure in General

Since I've figured out we've got a few coin collectors here.  It's time we have our own thread.  Not just limited to coins and coin roll hunting, but to Metal Detecting and other Treasure finding activities.

I enjoy coin roll hunting Cents and Nickels.  This weekend I met with Mom and my Nephew and we split a box of cents.  We found 11 wheats and 13 Canadian Pennies.  I was the winner with a '35 Wheat.

Here's my finds from that box.

A 43 P war nickel I found while metal detecting.  Love finding silver.

I too collect Nickels from Liberty Head, Buffalos and Jefferson. My Jefferson Nickel collection 38' - present in MS condition is almost complete though only a few are "full step".

While I was stationed in Britain, The Hoxne Hoard was discovered by a metal detector looking for his hammer. 1.75 M worth. In British pounds at the time. Was very near my base.

After he turned in what he had, they (government people) came and scoured the whole area, looking for more. And they found much more. And confiscated everything. More parts of the Chest, hinges, Sacks, Even his hammer.

They were only going to pay him 1% as well. Saying it belonged to the Govenment, because it was buried in British soil for so long. (Though the land was in his family for centuries,, I'm told.)

After many years in court, he finally got 100% compensation.

Funny part was the story was first broken by the the tabloid The Sun. Jealous that they'd been outscooped, mainstream media barely even covered it. Largest find of Roman coins ever. I first heard about it word-of-mouth. Because I was prolly only 15 or 20 miles away only reason.

But I been following the story.

I followed the story too... Amazing discovery. I am so glad he was awarded the win in court. Just recently a couple digging in their backyard found a large hoard of US $20.00 Gold Double Eagles.

Nice to see a few fellow numismatists here. I have been lucky enough to find a few nice US coins (from the late 19th and early - mid 20th Century) in change throughout the years, and have been stashing them away. I will be happy to post some pictures every once in a while, for those who are interested. Additionally, I came across a small stash of foreign (to me, anyway) coins a few years back. Hopefully, the international composition of the membership here can help me figure out what some of them are. I don't have anything tremendously valuable...no gold coins, true rarities, or highly sought after pieces. Still, I do enjoy collecting and look forward to interacting with others in this thread. Best regards, Eric

I do have a handful of US Large Cents too. I have a 1797 in about Good condition, 1803 in Very Good to Fine Condition and then have a few more in the 1840's and 1850's. My 1853 is my best condition Large Cent: Exremely Fine. None of them are key dates. For old US coins Large Cents are actually fairly reasonable to obtain even those in the very late 1700's and early 1800's. There is something very cool with holding a coin that you know was around, spent, held by someone that was alive in the 1700's :D

As soon as I can figure out how to use my new phone to email my pics to my lap top Ill post some coin pics.

After recently going through my coin collection for the first time in years, I rediscovered this beauty, alomst certainly rescued from the change handed to me after making a purchase.

Years ago, while I was out treasure hunting with some friends using a metal detector, we found an expensive pure (if memory serves) gold watch dumped in a little plastic bag!

That Indian Head cent is a cool find in change. How many years ago did you find it? Hard to do that now days.

Hi, many years ago I bought 2 texas 25 cents coins, but they got lost in the mail.

If I remember correctly they had a bull image.

I'm trying to find a coin with a bull, but I was not succesful.

(And for some reason google and ebay are showing me results of canadian coins)

clms_chess

Are you talking about State Quarters? :)

SocialPanda

yeah, thanks!

And it looks like if I confused Texas with Montana:

Well, but that coin was issued in 2007, I saw that around 2001-2002.

State quarters maintain their original designs?

(Chinese Pandas change every year)

Youtube is loaded with videos showing people's treasures with metal detecting, I've seen quite a few and all very interesting!

zapped

Yes, YouTube is indeed loaded with videos showing people's treasures with metal detecting, however, what this thread will hopefully show are yet other treasures which are relatively unknown and have never been seen or seen by only a few people. Hope your problem with your knees has improved. Best wishes, and enjoy this thread as you may see treasures and coins that so few, if anyone, has ever seen.

winerkleiner

Lol, ok!

zapped

Hey, my friend winerkleiner, do you have any coins or treasures to share? Please share should you have what might be an unknown treasure of sorts. Hoping all the best to you, my friend.

winerkleiner

Did I just get zapped?  Lol.

zapped

No, do you have a hard to find coin or a treasure to share my friend?

winerkleiner

I have been looking for that upside down plane on a stamp but I think it's locked up, it's worth millions!

zapped

Hope you find one some day. Now, that would indeed be a great find and a treasure! Show me the money'! lol
