Er, and what changes might those be oh wise one? Can't say I've noticed any changes...
Congratulations to Chess.com
The changes are, I hope, zero tolerance of racism and abuse. As you pointed out GL there used to be links posted to fascist websites.
Ah right, I thought you meant there'd been more changes since the clampdown.
It's been a long day, not quite with it!
there is a real disconnect amongst the staff here, and the last post shows it. there are new rules forbidding discussion of politics and religion, but, certain other topics that should be off limits have been allowed until a staff member either notices or perceives an issue that he or she thinks is beyond acceptable, and norms need to be set.
eric, get staff together and set the ground rules. it's not that difficult.
Yes it is difficult. The staff, and mods are in a no wn situation. Enforce the rules, and some arent happy. Dont enforce the rules, and some arent happy. Give some rules some slack, and some arent happy. Tow the line, and some arent happy. No matter what the staff/mods do, someone wont be happy. Then you have those that blatantly ignore the site rules, and still complain when they are punished. And you have those that are never going to be happy, no matter what you do.
I agree, not a simple task G.P, but all I ask for is consistency and if it's achieved, then I'll be happy. While some may push the boundaries a little on politics, (me included) the posts are rarely offensive.
We're told that the forums are now monitored more thoroughly but we still see many abusive, offensive remarks from the 'Right' being left on display. Meanwhile, other threads are closed down quickly if the arena of politics is touched on. It sometimes appears that the issue of politics is frowned on more so than openly offensive posts designed to insult and inflame.
"Left/Right" has nothing to do with anything. If it violates the site rules it get dealt with. It may not get dealt with as timely as some want, but it does get dealt with.
You want to help? Report things to the staff.
15,000,000+ members and a limited number of staff/mods.
The members that whine the most about not being able to discuss politics, etc. in the public forums, have a place to do that. Why dont they? Because the large majority would rather be "seen" than "heard"
What are you, some kind of pan-global mind-reader? Do you think it's appropriate for staff to prejudge members in this way?

He's not Staff nor is he a Moderator.
........but he was staff? Or has he never been staff or a mod? Or is he an undercover agent with his cover now blown?

I was a mod. Never staff...
Did you not read post number 1 of my goth thread? Or is there something about "This is not a religious discussion" that you don't understand?
Look pal, I completely support the principle that people should be free to believe whatever they want, no matter how potty it might be. But just in case you hadn't noticed, goths are rather disdainful of Christian imagery and if you proselytise on one of my threads again I'm going to be most unhappy about it.
Understand?

You were a mod? Where? On chess.com or Answers in Genesis?
More relevantly, how is anyone ever going to talk about Fischer here again?
Oh well, there's always Petrosian.
Or...<GASP> How agressively tactical they are!
Well it seems that my congrats were premature. While any threads or posts containing politics are closed this sort of stuff doesn't even raise an eyebrow from the new 'right-on' Staff. While the comments that I've quoted undoubtedly say more about the author that the intended victim I'm amazed that the rules don't seem to cover this bile.
I'd say that most of us who enjoy discussing politics in a friendly, polite manner have ceased, bending to the new stern rules, it would seem that the Staff turn a blind eye to abuse, racism and vitriol. So, I suppose we can assume that nothing has changed at all really. What a shame. Says a lot.
Ooh temper temper pusslappie.Keep it up!With a bit of luck your blood pressure will mount to an unacceptable level.Anyway your picture above is in bad taste. But then you are in bad taste Nickprick or should it be Nickclit? These days the folk in the Valleys-like across the Border have choice I believe.(know what I mean?
)
Now I'd imagine that most normal people reading this would surprised that the new squeeky clean chess.com admin allow such tripe, as they clamp down on anything with political opinion. We were told that the forums, especially Off-Topic would be monitored closely.
So I'm asking the direct question why political stuff isn't allowed but abuse, attacks and racism are still welcome on this site? Is is because the individuals who use many account names and engage in attacks are known and friends with Staff, or is it a Staff member abusing their position?

The moderators aren't reading every post in every thread - I think what you'll find is that we'll often be guided by the thread title when a new post is made, or if a thread seems to be getting a lot of hits and is getting longer we'll check it out. We do miss stuff, which is why we value the assistance of the community in reporting things.
That instance you've pointed out is not acceptable, and seems to have been part of a slanging match between the two of them in a thread belonging to someone who has since closed their account: since that thread owner is no longer around to police the content of their own thread and it's way too much work to redact the bad stuff, I have deleted the whole thing.
Personally, I think greater restrictions around posting would be great, but Chess.com has a very open raison d'etre (despite what various people seem to want to claim). There is a tool they are working with that will hopefully close the door on these vashikaran / babaji / black magic spammers that might be of use, but really, anything based purely on "bad words" is going to produce "false positives", because a machine doesn't understand anything about the context of a discussion.
Cheers,
David
Dear Chess.com
I reported, as per your guidance, the most vile and insidiously nasty posts.
But you didn't even bother to respond to me.
So tbh, whatever you say, I now take with a pinch of 'get on with it and put up with it... unless we lose money, because we don't care as long as you keep on paying our wages'.com.
I would like everyone to go and take a look at...

Take a glimpse at some of the things that are 'acceptable' on chess.com.

That's unusual - every report lodged through the Help -> Contact system gets logged and an automatic reply sent immediately, and a Support team person should respond in the next few days. If you didn't get the automated initial reply, there may have been a problem with the email address you supplied or with the spam filters interpreting Chess.com messages as "Junk" - please check your email inbox's spam or junk folder. If you got the automated email but no follow up from the Support team, you should be able to reply to that initial email or log another ticket, and it will definitely be followed up.
Possibly many have the impression that 'resistance is futile', certainly when it comes down to how their favourite chess site is run. As it happens, changes have occurred which proves that it's always worth having a go as these changes wouldn't have happened without some people opening their mouths and complaining
