Their will always be those that think everything is a conspiracy.  I know someone like that.  It must be a horrible way to live.

Do I think this virus is as "deadly" as the media wants us to believe?  No.

Do I think their are segments of society that do need to take precautions?  Obviously.

You want to get the vaccine, then get it.

You dont, then dont.

I will say this though.  If you (figuratively) made the decision not to get vaccinated, then stay home.  None of us like having to wear a mask all the time.  Especially since major league sports, and olympians are not required to.  Even though the virus is "deadly".

I made the choice to get vaccinated, and will wear a mask if i need to.  I will say that it is nice be able to go to the gym, and chess club and not have to wear a mask.  Yes we are supposed to, but no one is enforcing the mask mandate at those 2 places.  So again...I have a CHOICE.

It’s not so much that the virus is deadly in an individual sense, but that it is fatal enough (about 1% die and 10-20% may have permanent damage to various organs) and super transmissible (without precaution, 1 Covid positive case will spread it to 3 people, 7 if it’s the delta variant. For comparison, the Spanish flu was about 2.7, chicken pox is 10, and most other diseases sit below 1.5).

So, we have a situation where one case can very quickly turn into 1000 cases (5 weeks ago, we had 11,000 new cases a day, now it’s over 140,000–with precautions in place and substantial vaccination). Ebola and small pox are certainly more fatal to an individual, but the thing about Covid is it spreads so fast, that it makes up for that 1% death number. America had 159,787 cases yesterday. One percent of which is 1,598. That’s still a butt ton of people dying, particularly for one day. And many more will need hospitalizations to recover, and I think Mississippi as a whole is down to seven beds as of yesterday. That means hospitals may have to do what Italy did in the early days of the pandemic and triage those cases most likely to recover while leaving those least likely to fend for themselves (most likely die). If we hit this point, that 1% death number will rise as it is reflective of full medical assistance. This, the precautions have always been about buying medical professionals time to learn treatment methods and reduce patients for any given moment.

Tl;dr: 1% of 159,000 is greater than fifty percent of 5 (to use ebola death rates and 2014 US infections)

So I ask again.  If this virus is so "deadly" then why is professional sports allowed to continue without masks?  And why were the olympics allowed to continue in a country that is being ravaged by this virus and the athletes were not required to wear masks?

BlindThief

That’s a red herring. They may be vaccinated meaning the risk is nominal. They’re also doing their job away from throngs of spectators. What is more, many sports leagues are doing bubble containment for their players (further reducing risk).

If you don’t want them to participate in sports, then don’t watch. But they’re doing their job because the market demand to watch sportsball persists.

IMKeto

I dont watch.  I quit watching last year when pro sports became political.  Again...if this virus is so deadly and has an incubation period.  Why are athletes allowed to be around each other unmasked?  Is the point to eradicate this virus and not just lessen it?

My not watching is not going to stop them from participating.  And as usual.  It is always about money.  I need a mask to protect myself and others from this "deadly" virus to buy eggs.  But if i played professional sports i wouldn't need a mask.

Aren't these professional sports players required to live in a bubble until their championship ends? I remember when the isolation bubble at the Tokyo Olympics broke, and the organisers were panicking. That made a lot of headlines then.

Don't all sports teams follow this? If they do, I guess that's why they're allowed to be around each other without masks.

I'd take the imposition of masking up at the grocery store over forced isolation from the outside population for weeks on end and constant testing.

Sure its a double standard with the masks, and I will wear it like a good little Nazi.  But at the same time places like the gym and chess club are not enforcing the mask rules. No one complains and im good with that.  But I also have no issue with anyone that wants to wear a mask.  Unless you're in a car by yourself then what are you doing???

ChampoftheBepoCamp

Wearing masks are cool...

and what about for socially awkward people?

ChampoftheBepoCamp

Its nice for the socially awkward lel... one positive

Speaking of trolling...

Your flying spaghetti monster meets Long John Silver persona has nothing on your communist pig persona... wink.png

ChampoftheBepoCamp

Lame all you do is bicker... make ad hominems...

The only "serious" post you commented on had statements like "Not by sight" and assertions and going round in a circle...

I guess your not intelligible enough to X through or identify the "Troll articles" you so abhor... nothing more than special pleading from you

ChampoftheBepoCamp

And masks can of course be beloved by those who may be shy, socially awkward etc? Perhaps not on a large enough scale but it is one positive for some...

ChampoftheBepoCamp

Lame all you do is bicker and make stupid statements... now go complain about "trolls" and "this is so stupid"...

IMKeto

btickler, my apologies for getting side track here.  I will delete my non-covid posts.

You can't use 'intelligible" in that context, just FYI.

I'll take the notion of "special pleading" under advisement...

I've given you some leeway, but be aware that I am deciding whether you should be posting here based on your whole posting history, not just the peppa pig stuff.  That was the underlying message of my comment, but I guess that flew on by wink.png...so, I'll be less subtle.   You're on 2 strikes out of 3, so...up to you how to proceed.
