Hi

I try always to say "hello" and "thanks for the game"

but what is the correct way to say the above. I am unfortunately not a native speaker. I am trying to use the right phrases but sometimes a simple dictionary lookup isn't enough.

I know there is some difference between english greetings and US greetings.

please advice. How would you say "hello" I know there is a lot of alternatives.

some say cheers, some say "how are you?"

also how do you say "good luck" Some say "break a leg". ?

also how do I reply if someone says it to me ? likewise? same to you?

I think your English is just fine.  While I don't always say Hello (or Hi!) I often do say Thanks for the game(s).  Just speak from your heart, and you'll be fine.Smile

"gl" is a common abbreviation for "good luck." "gg" is a common abbreviation for "good game."

However, I agree, your English is very good, and you seem to have come up with a number of good answers on your own, which is a sign of ability!

I agree with the above advice and I'd like to add that "break a leg" would not be suitable in a chess-game invironment. Smile You can try it out when a good friend of yours is about to go "on stage" or showing off his free style in-line skate acrobatics otherwise ..... I can't advise using that phrase.

Saying hello is common and perfectly fine to say, but if you want alternatives you can use: Hi!, Yo!, How's it going?, Howdy!, Whats up?, and many others. For good luck, you can literally just say good luck, saying break a leg is an idiom that means the same thing
