Just a PSA to everyone... you are free to post personal information about yourself online, however, I don't always recommend it. Please be aware this can be harmful to you if you're not aware of the risks.
Other people may use that information to "dox" you or reveal your real identity. It may result in others targeting you with abuse, harassment, impersonation and even violence in your real life or on other social media platforms.
A few tips you can follow to protect yourself...
- Use fake names and profile pictures online. Sometimes even signs or landmarks in photos can reveal where you are.
- Think before you share something. What you do online may be permanent and can sometimes be found even after a profile or comments are deleted.
- Make sure your online friends are people you know IRL. Not everyone is who they say they are and they may be out to hurt you in some way.
- Do not engage in any form of trolling, catfishing, rage baiting, scam baiting, pranking, harassment, etc. You may not be as anonymous as you think and could become the target of social engineering or other attacks online and IRL (such as swatting, stalking or physical attacks).
- Tell your parents or guardians if something you don’t like happens online.
- If you are getting abused, harassed or threatened by someone on chess.com contact support and then let a moderator know if it is urgent (especially if someone is revealing personal information about you on chess.com that you don't want to be public).
Be awesome everyone! +100 elo
