Wow @Yosef115 got a generous friend
As far as gifting goes I think it's typically females getting them, maybe from being cute or something. I'd love to see the full list. If not close to 50-50 gender split, there's a serious issue.
I really wanted to know if chess.com itself gifted any memberships to anybody?
You can win a membership in special tournaments, or somebody can gift it to you as others pointed out.
Chess.com also had a referral program through which they used to give a month's membership if you invited people. I'm not sure if that program is still up or not~

Wow that's something I didn't know. Thank you! desperate to win a membership
But there must be some generous gifters in the society who would like to help the chess community. So we must never give up.
1. Hack the website and create bugs
2. Report that bug
3. Let chess.com "congratulate" you and get a 3 day membership
Haha! You actually gave me an idea. So thank you for that... Now I'm going to look for bugs in this website

Hehe , you don't even need to take the pains to hack the site-- there are plenty of bugs present already.
But if you're really good at finding bugs, loopholes and security vulnerabilities, the site can pay you with a lot more than 3 day memberships.

Who has won free memberships from chess.com and how did you do it?
