Aww baby, I feel weird. Hot, feverish, weak at the knees. Either I've caught that Chinese cold or I'm in luuurve.
Free Speech on chess.com
The fact that there's no Facebook in China is not new......it may be new to you, but its been in the news for years. There's no Google in China either.
Didn't say it was new; just pointing out that free speech/discussion is the way we learn. Did you know that you can't get Peanut Butter in China either ( or very hard to find)...there's one for you.
I think you better re-read post 30 because now you're not making any sense. "having political discussions in clubs"........ is not problematic on Chess.com. The ban of no religion or politics in off-topic, by design is fine for this site.
I didn't say it was problematic on chess.com. The point was made that discussing politics on a website would probably get that site banned in China. My point is that discussing politics anywhere on a site (off-topic OR clubs) would be problematic for that site concerning China. FB was banned following the riots in 2009 because it was being used as a communication tool. Banning religious and political talk in the off-topic forum doesn't solve this.
Free speech is just one way of learning. I prefer stick & carrot approach myself.
Expound on that...
Also, the constitution is a pretty old document (living in the past) - it appears you have an appreciation for that document.
Here's what I will expound on...... Chess.com has..... to the best of my knowledge.....at least 3 groups for you to discuss religion & politics. "Rants & Tirades" "Open Discussion" & "Free Speech"
Thank you. I am aware of this. That solution is like saying, "go to your favorite bar and discuss politics with all your friends who agree with you, just don't do it on the public sidewalk or the public square." The point of free speech is that a person has the right to discuss in public whatever is important to him or her. I realize this is chess.com, a privately owned site, and the owners can do whatever is prudent for their business model. But I think the discussion is worth having when similar sites do not all have such bans in their off-topic forums of politics and religion.
Also, the argument has been made above that this is a "chess" site for chess discussion. That is not entirely true. It is a community of chess enthusiasts who talk about all kinds of things (in the off-topic forum): evolution, relationships, current events, other hobbies, fun and inane topics, etc - just not religion or politics. Aren't communities more deeply rewarding and richer with a completely open off-topic forum?

Are these forums or clubs?
You've been here for a yr and a half. And I thought....."Why is his morality bothering him now"? Erik Allbest will change his site when he's dam well ready to. Then I went to Squirrel's home page. One group......Christian Evangelism You have a nice day kid.
Lol...joined that one yesterday. My response, then I went to Ronalds FB page and the man who doesn't live in the past has a post about the constitution of which the first amendment is about freedom of speech, religion, and press. ![]()
I see your point, but do we really come here to be accosted by a male-feminist or the like?
I would argue that it's a case of context. There are places for different things. They seem to be going for a more chill place, then you put in place a few very basic parameters which reach a majority of people.
It does make sense to me. People generally don't want to be dealing with it in the context.
I believe there are other forum and site rules dealing with being accosted inappropriately.
Context is specifically the issue here. You are right. The 'off-topic' forum is a public forum as opposed to a club. Of course, anyone can choose to find a club of like-minded individuals who agree with him or her on everything. But, the point of free speech is that in a public setting a person can discuss whatever they are interested in and have discussion and feedback.
Unless you can provide a link then post 47 is completely false. Ronald doesn't have a facebook page discussing the Constitution, or the 1st Amendment, or freedom of religion. Provide the link or I'll ask Staff to lock this thread.

It was a post about "The Law of the Land" on January 14 at 8:47am. If this is not you, I apologize. Looked like it was. By they way, I agree with the post (but if I didn't, isn't that the purpose of free speech?)
I hit the embed setting; must not have worked correctly. I edited it to include the date and time of the post. But again, that's not the point. No big deal to me either way.
What's going on here?
This is a discussion of free speech and open discussion on chess.com specifically related to the 'politics/religion ban' in the off-topic forum.
That may have been what it started out as......but now the OP is grabbing nonsense from Facebook and saying it belongs to members on Chess.com. There are millions of "Cote's" on facebook. You haven't been to college......you haven't been to china......you haven't been in the military......I doubt you know anything about free speech.......but you want to start a controvercial thread in the forums.......that's what kids & trolls do.
Ronald, why are you making this so personal? You made an observation about my page from Chess.com and I made one (in jest) about what I thought was your FB page (if it wasn't yours I apologize and have apologized). Why are you so defensive about this topic?
My guess is that having political discussions in clubs would be problematic in China; thus, the ban in the off-topic forum probably doesn't solve that problem.
